After years at OpenAI, OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma joins Anthropic, bringing valuable experience to the firm. Durk Kingma, a prominent figure in the AI research community and one of the founding members of OpenAI, has announced his move to Anthropic, a rival AI firm. Anthropic, which is supported by tech giants like Amazon and Google, has attracted Kingma due to its focus on developing AI systems with an emphasis on responsibility and safety.

In a post on X, Kingma revealed that he would be primarily working from the Netherlands. However, details about the specific role or department he will be joining at Anthropic remain undisclosed.

Kingma’s decision to join Anthropic is rooted in his alignment with the company’s approach to AI development. In his post, he stated that Anthropic’s mission of creating powerful yet responsible AI systems resonates with his beliefs. He also expressed excitement about collaborating with former colleagues from OpenAI and Google.

This move reflects Kingma’s long-standing interest in ensuring that AI systems are not only cutting-edge but also developed with ethical considerations at the forefront.

Kingma’s Distinguished Career in AI

OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma joins Anthropic, marking a significant shift in the AI research landscape. With a Ph.D. in machine learning from the University of Amsterdam, Kingma’s career in AI has been extensive. He began as a doctoral fellow at Google and later became one of the founding members of OpenAI. At OpenAI, Kingma was instrumental in leading the algorithms team that developed generative AI models such as DALL-E 3 and ChatGPT.

Kingma’s work has had a significant impact on the AI landscape, contributing to the development of some of the most well-known AI tools in recent years.

Anthropic’s Growing Roster of AI Talent

Anthropic has a track record of attracting top-tier talent in the AI field. The addition of Kingma is part of a broader trend, as the company recently hired Jan Leike, OpenAI’s former safety lead, and brought on Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram and Artifact, as its first head of product.

Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, himself a former VP of research at OpenAI, has been successful in building a team that includes several former OpenAI employees, positioning the company as a leading player in ethical AI development.

Kingma’s transition could have broader implications for the AI industry. As a leader in AI research, his move to Anthropic may encourage others to follow suit, especially those who share concerns about the commercialization of AI. Anthropic has been actively recruiting top talent from the industry, and Kingma’s arrival only strengthens its position as a serious competitor to OpenAI. The fact that other key figures from OpenAI, like Jan Leike and John Schulman, have also joined Anthropic further underscores this growing trend.

OpenAI’s Shift to For-Profit and the Impact on Talent

Kingma’s departure comes shortly after OpenAI’s shift to a for-profit model, which has been met with criticism from several of its founders, including Elon Musk. The restructuring of OpenAI’s business model has been a significant factor in recent high-profile exits from the company. Other notable departures include co-founder John Schulman and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who also joined Anthropic to focus on AI safety.

These moves signal a growing divide in the AI industry between companies prioritizing rapid technological advancement and those, like Anthropic, that place greater emphasis on the ethical and responsible development of AI.

In a move that reflects his alignment with ethical AI practices, OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma joins Anthropic. Kingma’s decision to leave OpenAI marks a significant career transition, as he shifts his focus toward AI alignment and ethical concerns. His move to Anthropic allows him to continue working on cutting-edge AI research while prioritizing the safe and responsible development of these technologies. His extensive experience and leadership in the field are expected to make a substantial contribution to Anthropic’s efforts in advancing responsible AI.
