In a vital step to strengthen India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities, Apple has decided to begin producing AirPods in the country, according to The Times of India on October 3, 2024. This decision follows Apple’s successful shift of iPhone production worth billions of dollars to India in recent years, establishing the country as a key component of its global supply chain.

The plan to manufacture AirPods in India is part of Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its production hubs, decreasing dependence on China and enhancing its manufacturing presence in India. This initiative is expected to further boost India’s growing reputation as a center for electronics production and innovation.

AirPods Production Timeline and Facilities

Apple will start by manufacturing AirPod casings at the Pune facility run by Jabil, a U.S.-based contractor, according to the report. Full-scale production of AirPods will later take place at Foxconn’s new plant in Telangana. Foxconn, Apple’s largest supplier, has been pivotal in relocating production to India over the past few years.

Initially, the production of AirPod casings will start at Jabil’s Pune plant, which is already involved in producing parts for Apple. Full assembly at Foxconn’s Telangana facility is expected to begin by early next year. This plan aligns with Apple’s goal of expanding its production capabilities and establishing a more resilient supply chain by reducing dependence on a single region.

The decision to manufacture AirPods in India marks another significant step in Apple’s expansion, following the shift of iPhone production. This development is likely to create jobs and strengthen India’s ambitions to become a global electronics manufacturing leader.

Apple’s choice to move AirPods production to India is part of a larger strategy to decrease reliance on China. The company has faced various challenges in recent years, such as supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China. These factors have pushed Apple to look for alternative manufacturing locations, with India emerging as a top choice due to its growing economy, skilled labor, and favorable government policies.

In the past few years, Apple has vitally increased iPhone production in India by working with key suppliers like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. In 2023 alone, the company shipped over 10 million iPhones in India, up from 6 million the previous year, taking the lead in revenue over its rival Samsung.

With the shift to AirPods production, Apple aims to replicate its iPhone success in India, bolstering its market presence and reducing risks associated with concentrating its supply chain in one country. India’s large workforce, increasing infrastructure, and government incentives under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme make it an attractive destination for companies like Apple to expand their manufacturing base.

Government Support and India’s Growing Electronics Manufacturing Sector

India’s government has actively encouraged global companies to invest in local manufacturing. Under the Make in India initiative, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, various schemes have been introduced to promote domestic production, including the PLI program, which offers financial incentives to electronics manufacturers.

Apple’s increasing focus on India aligns with the country’s vision of becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse. The company has benefited from government support through the PLI scheme, which has incentivized local production of iPhones and other electronic products.

Now, with Apple expanding to AirPods production, it represents another milestone in India’s effort to solidify its role in the global electronics industry. The new manufacturing activities are expected to generate substantial employment, particularly in Maharashtra and Telangana, where Jabil and Foxconn’s facilities are located. Moreover, it could help further develop India’s electronics ecosystem, inspiring other technology companies to follow Apple’s lead.

Strategic Importance of Diversifying Apple’s Supply Chain

Apple’s decision to manufacture in India extends beyond AirPods. In July 2024, Moneycontrol reported that the company was preparing to restart its efforts to produce iPads in India. Additionally, Apple has increased production of AirPods wireless charging components, which are exported to China and Vietnam. This diversification is vital for Apple, as it helps mitigate the risks of depending too heavily on a single region for manufacturing.

India’s growing role in Apple’s supply chain highlights the company’s strategic focus on navigating international trade complexities, especially with China. As tensions between the U.S. and China escalate, Apple has been compelled to find new manufacturing solutions, and India has proven to be a viable option, offering expanding production capabilities, infrastructure improvements, and supportive government policies.

Apple’s decision to produce AirPods in India demonstrates its dedication to expanding its manufacturing presence in the country. This step is expected to have a lasting impact on India’s electronics industry, paving the way for more high-tech production in the country.

With full-scale AirPods production planned to begin in early 2025, Apple will not only be strengthening local manufacturing but also preparing to meet growing demand for its products in both domestic and international markets. As Apple continues to diversify its supply chain, it is likely to explore additional opportunities to produce other products in India, such as iPads and potentially even MacBooks in the future.

In conclusion, Apple’s plan to manufacture AirPods in India is a strategic decision that benefits both the company and the country. While Apple enhances its global supply chain, India stands to gain from increased employment, innovation, and economic growth, reinforcing its status as a rising force in global electronics manufacturing.
