Renault has officially introduced the 4 E-Tech, a modern reimagining of its classic R4, a global hit that sold over 8.13 million units across five continents during its 31-year production run. Known for its utilitarian appeal, the original R4 was a simple, affordable vehicle that made car ownership possible for millions. However, the new Renault 4 E-Tech takes that iconic simplicity and updates it for today’s drivers with more features, technology, and versatility.
Nostalgic Design, Modern Twist
The R4 E-Tech carries a design that nods to the past while embracing modern sensibilities. The silhouette, with its horizontal bonnet, vertical grille, and sloping rear tail, pays homage to the original R4. Classic design elements like the rear-quarter windows, tow hook-inspired stoppers, and even the rear pillar have been reinterpreted for a new era. But the 4 E-Tech isn’t merely a throwback; it’s larger than its R5-shaped sibling, measuring 220mm longer and 81mm taller, offering greater versatility and comfort.
Perhaps the most striking feature is the single-piece polycarbonate grille flanked by spherical headlights, adding a fresh modernity to the classic form. The tail end features sleek three-segment capsule taillights. Between these signature features, the 4 E-Tech boasts a standout plastic canvas roof that opens up to three-fold, transforming into a sunroof or fully extending to 92cm in length and 80cm in width—all controlled via Renault’s virtual assistant, Reno, for ultimate convenience.
Interior Customization: Jeans-Theme and Beyond
The interior of the R4 E-Tech is just as customizable and innovative as its exterior. Renault offers up to 670 combinations of colors and fabrics, allowing drivers to tailor the cabin to their tastes. The “Techno” trim stands out for those looking to embrace a unique jeans-themed interior, a literal nod to former Renault CEO Pierre Dreyfus, who once compared the adaptability of the original R4 to a pair of jeans.
Across its three trim levels—Evolution, Techno, and Iconic—the new R4 includes a dual-screen setup, comprising a seven or 10.1-inch digital display paired with a 10-inch multimedia screen. Audiophiles will appreciate the 401kW Harmon Kardon audio system, boasting nine speakers for an immersive sound experience. Renault’s digital assistant, Reno, integrates Google services and ChatGPT, making it easy for passengers to interact with the car and access over 200 voice-commanded features.
Versatile and Fun Performance
Underneath the revamped body lies Renault’s AmpR platform, shared with the R5. Two powertrain options will be available at launch, designed to offer a range of driving experiences. The “Comfort” version features a 52kWh battery, delivering 150bhp and a range of 250 miles. It accelerates to 62 mph in just 8.5 seconds and has a top speed of 93 mph. Weighing in at 1,410kg, the R4 E-Tech promises to be just as lively and entertaining to drive as its smaller sibling, the R5.
For urban drivers, Renault offers a more economical option—the “Urban Range”—which comes equipped with a 40kWh battery and a 90kW motor. This version delivers 120bhp, 166lb ft of torque, and a reduced range of 186 miles, but it still comes packed with all-terrain tyres, a heat pump, and V2L/V2G charging capabilities.
A New Era for a Classic
With boot space of 420 liters and modular compartments totaling an additional 23.3 liters throughout the interior, the Renault 4 E-Tech prioritizes both functionality and style. Priced to start at just over £30,000, Renault has yet to announce exact figures, but the new 4 E-Tech aims to make a significant mark, much like its predecessor did. With modern technology, versatile customization, and a nod to its iconic roots, Renault’s latest offering is set to attract a new generation of drivers while sparking nostalgia in those who remember the original R4 fondly.
