Meta’s hardware ambitions are taking a bold step forward with the rumoured development of Oakley Meta smartglasses. Following the success of the Ray-Ban Meta range, Meta is reportedly planning to expand its wearable tech portfolio with new, specialized products aimed at niche audiences, as detailed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Oakley Meta Smartglasses for Sports Enthusiasts

One of the standout projects is the Oakley Meta smartglasses, codenamed “Supernova 2.” Unlike the Ray-Ban Meta, these glasses are tailored for cyclists and sports enthusiasts, featuring a central camera for hands-free functionality. Inspired by Oakley’s visor-style Sphaera design, they focus on performance and practicality rather than casual wear. With this move, Meta is poised to capture a distinct and motivated customer base that values functionality during high-intensity activities.

Expanding the Ray-Ban Meta Line

Meta isn’t leaving its Ray-Ban Meta range behind. Plans for a follow-up model, codenamed “Hypernova,” include a significant upgrade: a built-in screen within one lens. This innovation will allow users to view notifications, apps, and photo previews seamlessly. However, these advancements come at a cost, with a projected price of $1,000. For now, the current Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses start at an accessible $299.

Companion Wearables to Enhance Functionality

In addition to its smartglasses, Meta is reportedly testing companion devices like the “Ceres” wristband, designed to replace touch controls on the glasses. A more advanced smartwatch-like wearable with a display is also in development, promising to offer even more interactivity and convenience.

Future of AR with Project Orion

Meta’s ambitious plans extend to AR technology. The company aims to send its Orion prototype AR smartglasses to developers in 2026, with a consumer-ready version, codenamed “Artemis,” expected to launch in 2027. These AR glasses could mark a turning point for the industry, providing immersive experiences for users.

Competition in the Smartglass Market

While the Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses currently face limited competition, new contenders are emerging. For instance, Halliday’s smartglasses, showcased at CES 2025, feature an integrated screen for a unique user experience. Meta’s proactive strategy aims to solidify its leadership in this evolving market.

Conclusion

Meta’s Oakley smartglasses represent an exciting leap forward in wearable technology. By targeting specific user groups and integrating cutting-edge features, Meta is setting the stage for the next big trend in smart wearables. Keep an eye on these developments as they redefine the smartglass landscape in 2025 and beyond.
