Meta`s 50,000 Km undersea cable project to enhance India-US` digital connectivity

Meta, the technology company, is pushing to build the world’s longest undersea cable system with the vision of redefining digital connectivity between India and the United States. Project Waterworth, the ambitious name given to this project, will stretch 50,000 kilometers over five continents and beyond the Earth’s surface.

The initiative, announced as part of Meta’s ongoing investment in driving the world’s digital infrastructure, will raise the bar for intercontinental data transfer. With an expected completion date before the end of this decade, Project Waterworth is a multi-billion-dollar bet on the future of global communication.

“This investment reaffirms our ambition to empower India’s growing digital ecosystem and stimulate technological innovation,” said a spokesperson for Meta. The project coincides with the critical moment that demand for digital services is heating up across the connected world.

High-Capacity Indo-US Cable Project

What distinguishes Project Waterworth is its superior technical parameters. The cable system will feature 24 pairs of fibers, vastly more than most systems that run between 8 and 16 pairs. That greater capacity will be used to serve the ever-growing needs of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and other hungry data applications.

The engineering feat is gigantic with cables buried up to 7,000 meters in some cases. Meta worked on advanced routing techniques and pioneering burial techniques to protect the cables, particularly where they are vulnerable in shallow water along the coastline to damage by ship anchors and other hazards.

Strengthening Digital Connectivity in the Indian Ocean

Project Waterworth comes after renewed diplomatic outreach by the United States and India. The project featured in the US-India Joint Leaders’ Statement, which addressed the importance of stable undersea cable infrastructure for the Indian Ocean region. This collaboration demonstrates the two nations’ determination to secure strong digital connectivity with trusted vendors.

The impact of this gargantuan infrastructure undertaking is far-reaching beyond sheer technical accomplishment. By creating three new oceanic corridors with high-speed connectivity, Project Waterworth will spur economic growth through its connected economies. This is particularly significant in India, where the digital economy is expanding at an exponential pace.

“Subsea cables are the backbone of global internet infrastructure,” a digital infrastructure expert said. “With over 95% of intercontinental traffic reliant on these underwater networks, Project Waterworth will be instrumental in powering everything from streaming video to online transactions.”

Meta’s experience in the subsea cable projects is extensive, having undertaken over 20 similar projects. But Project Waterworth is their largest undertaking yet. The company’s experience in the sector, combined with cutting-edge technology, puts them in a strong position to overcome the daunting challenges ahead.

As digital transformation continues to reshape global business and communication, Project Waterworth is a future-proof critical infrastructure. By connecting major economic centers across continents, the undersea cable system will help underpin the growing needs of an increasingly interconnected world.

With a completion deadline of 2030, Project Waterworth is a testament to Meta’s vision for a more connected global digital world. As businesses and consumers increasingly demand faster, more resilient digital connectivity, this massive infrastructure investment will be the capacity and reliability needed for the next generation of digital services.
