Uber has laid off around 200-250 employees in India across different functions and offices as part of a major global restructuring that will eliminate about 3,300 jobs worldwide.

The India layoffs are part of Uber’s biggest workforce reduction since the Covid-19 pandemic. The cuts come as the ride-hailing giant looks to simplify its organisational structure, reduce management layers and redirect resources towards its core businesses and emerging growth opportunities.

People familiar with the matter said employees across technology, operations and other functions have been affected. The layoffs include both individual contributors and managers, with teams across Uber’s Indian offices impacted by the restructuring.

India Teams Among Those Hit by Job Cuts

Uber began informing affected employees on Wednesday, shortly after CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the restructuring in an email to employees.

India has become an important global hub for Uber, with the company maintaining major technology, business and operational teams in the country. The scale of the latest cuts therefore reflects the broader effort to reshape the company’s global workforce rather than a move limited to a particular business unit.

The 200-250 layoffs represent only a fraction of Uber’s India workforce, but they come at a time when technology companies globally are placing greater emphasis on efficiency and tighter organisational structures.

Uber’s global workforce reduction is expected to affect roughly 10% of its employees.

Why Is Uber Cutting Jobs?

Khosrowshahi said Uber had expanded rapidly over the past five years, with its top line nearly tripling during that period.

However, that growth also created a more complicated organisation. According to the CEO, Uber accumulated additional layers of management, increased coordination requirements and fragmented ownership across teams.

The latest restructuring is designed to create what Uber describes as a “simpler and faster” organisation.

As part of the plan, Uber intends to reduce the number of employees positioned seven or more layers below the CEO by 20%. The company is also planning to nearly halve the number of small “micro-teams” operating across the organisation.

The changes are intended to give teams clearer ownership while allowing decisions to be made more quickly.

Uber Consolidates Delivery and Engineering Teams

The restructuring will also change how several parts of Uber’s business are organised.

Uber currently has three Delivery Operations teams covering restaurants, retail and direct delivery. These groups will be brought together under single-threaded teams operating at global, regional and country levels.

The company is also combining parts of its core engineering and science organisations.

The changes are aimed at reducing duplication and improving coordination, allowing Uber to direct more resources toward areas it believes can generate future growth.

Focus Shifts Toward Robotaxis

While Uber is cutting jobs, the company says the savings from the restructuring will be reinvested into growth and innovation.

Its core ride-hailing and delivery businesses will remain major priorities, but autonomous mobility is emerging as another important area of investment.

Uber has been increasing its focus on robotaxis as autonomous vehicles move closer to wider commercial adoption. Rather than developing a fully autonomous vehicle system entirely on its own, Uber has pursued partnerships with companies working on self-driving technology.

The company has said it plans to commit more than $10 billion to robotaxi partnerships in the coming years.

That creates an interesting contrast for Uber: the company is reducing its traditional workforce while preparing to invest heavily in a technology that could fundamentally reshape the ride-hailing industry.

What the Restructuring Means for Uber

The latest layoffs mark a significant shift for a company that has spent years expanding its operations and workforce.

Uber’s challenge now is to maintain growth while becoming leaner and faster. By removing management layers, consolidating teams and redirecting spending toward strategic priorities, the company hopes to operate more efficiently without slowing its expansion.

For employees in India and around the world, however, the restructuring means a substantial number of jobs are being eliminated.

For Uber, the longer-term bet is that a smaller and more streamlined organisation can help the company compete more aggressively—not only in traditional ride-hailing and delivery, but also in the emerging robotaxi market.
