Despite turbulent markets, Forbes’ 2025 World’s Billionaires list has grown to a record-breaking 3,028 individuals, including 288 newcomers—an increase from 265 in 2024. These fresh billionaires collectively hold nearly $680 billion, averaging $2.4 billion each. Representing 33 different countries and territories, they include global icons such as rock legend Bruce Springsteen, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, and actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Once again, the United States has produced the highest number of new billionaires, with 103 individuals joining the elite club. Leading the pack are Marilyn Simons and Lyndal Stephens Greth, the two wealthiest newcomers this year. Simons, the widow of hedge fund magnate Jim Simons, has an estimated net worth of $31 billion following her husband’s passing in May 2024. Meanwhile, Greth, daughter of oil tycoon Autry Stephens, inherited a fortune worth $25.8 billion after his death in August 2024.
Germany follows with 37 new billionaires, including the youngest of the year, 19-year-old Johannes von Baumbach, worth $5.4 billion. He, along with 14 other heirs, inherited shares of the Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceutical fortune. China and Hong Kong are third, contributing 32 new billionaires, including jeweler Xu Gaoming ($8.2 billion). Rounding out the top five are India (17 new billionaires) and Russia (15).
The Self-Made Majority
A striking 70% (196 individuals) of 2025’s billionaire newcomers built their fortunes from scratch rather than inheriting wealth. The richest self-made addition is Saudi Arabian businessman Sulaiman Al Habib, whose net worth is $10.9 billion. Saudi billionaires are appearing on the list for the first time since 2017.
Among younger self-made billionaires, 28-year-old Alexandr Wang, CEO and co-founder of Scale AI, leads the way with a net worth of $2 billion. Wang’s company, specializing in artificial intelligence and data labeling, has grown rapidly as demand for AI-driven solutions has skyrocketed.
Celebrity Billionaires: From Art to Wealth
Some of the most recognizable figures on the list amassed their wealth through entertainment and media.
– Bruce Springsteen ($1.2 billion): The “Born to Run” singer, famous for his blue-collar Americana image, has now joined the ranks of the ultra-wealthy. His extensive discography includes 21 studio albums, 10 live albums, and 7 EPs, collectively selling 140 million copies worldwide. In 2021, he sold his music catalog to Sony for around $500 million before taxes, contributing significantly to his fortune.
– Arnold Schwarzenegger ($1.1 billion): The Hollywood action star and former California governor has accumulated substantial wealth from his decades-long film career, real estate investments, private equity ventures, and stock market gains.
– Jerry Seinfeld ($1.1 billion): The legendary comedian, best known for his hit sitcom Seinfeld, secured a $500 million deal with Netflix to stream the show for five years. Additionally, his continued work in stand-up and other streaming projects ensures his financial success.
Women in the Billionaire Club
Only 15% of this year’s new billionaires are women, and nearly two-thirds of them inherited their fortunes. One major exception is 71-year-old Barbara Banke, co-founder of Jackson Family Wines, which produces the renowned Kendall-Jackson wines from Sonoma. Banke built the company with her late husband, Jess Jackson, who passed away in 2011, and has successfully expanded the business, earning her a place among the world’s billionaires.
Tech Leads the Way
Technology remains the dominant industry for new billionaires, with 46 fresh faces emerging from the sector.
– Hao Tang ($4.3 billion): The wealthiest tech newcomer, Tang made his fortune from an early investment in AppLovin, a mobile gaming and marketing software firm whose stock price has surged over 300% in the past year.
– Ben Lamm ($3.7 billion): The Texas-based entrepreneur founded Colossal Biosciences, a company attempting to revive the woolly mammoth using genetic technology.
– Dario Amodei and the Anthropic team ($1.2 billion each): Amodei and his six co-founders raised $3.5 billion in March for their AI startup Anthropic, which was valued at $61.5 billion.
Finance and Healthcare Also Shine
After technology, the finance sector contributed the second-highest number of new billionaires, with 41 entrants. Among them, the most notable self-made individuals include:
– Justin Sun ($8.5 billion): The controversial crypto mogul behind the TRON blockchain and other crypto ventures.
– Michael Dorrell ($8.5 billion): The Australian-born private equity investor has built a powerful financial empire.
Healthcare was the third most significant sector for new billionaires, with 40 individuals making the list, including the 15 heirs to the Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceutical dynasty from Germany.
The 2025 billionaires list showcases a diverse mix of business moguls, self-made entrepreneurs, and heirs. The continued rise of technology and finance industries in wealth creation is evident, while celebrities from entertainment and sports are increasingly crossing into billionaire status. Despite economic fluctuations, the trend of accumulating massive wealth remains unshaken, proving that opportunities for financial success persist worldwide.
