In a dramatic public rebuke, Elon Musk has turned his fire on a piece of legislation backed by someone he has long supported President Donald Trump. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who also served briefly in the Trump administration’s cost-cutting initiative known as DOGE, called Trump’s latest tax-and-spending bill a “disgusting abomination” in a blistering post on his social media platform, X.

Musk’s criticism came just days after the House passed the president’s highly controversial tax-and-spending-cut legislation, dubbed by Trump as “one big, beautiful bill.” Elon Musk, no stranger to controversy himself, pulled no punches.

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk posted.

He then slammed the bill as “massive, outrageous, and pork-filled,” adding that it is a “disgusting abomination” which will further fuel America’s mounting debt crisis.

“Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

Musk’s outrage seems rooted in fiscal discipline, a theme he championed while leading the Trump administration’s Discretionary Optimization for Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force a short-lived but high-profile attempt to rein in federal waste and streamline government spending.

Elon Musk Warns of a Soaring Deficit

In a follow-up post, Elon Musk elaborated on his main concern: the impact of the bill on the national deficit.

“This bill will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt,” he wrote.

The U.S. federal deficit, already a pressing concern for many economists and lawmakers, appears poised to balloon even further under the provisions of the new legislation. Musk’s figures mirror Congressional Budget Office projections, which warn that a combination of tax cuts and discretionary spending increases could widen the gap between revenue and expenditures dramatically.

A Rift Between Musk and Trump?

Though Musk has been one of Trump’s most prominent business allies donating over $250 million to Trump’s 2024 campaign this latest critique signals a growing rift. When asked about Musk’s comments, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed them with notable nonchalance:

“The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill… It doesn’t change the President’s opinion. This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”

The administration seems content to brush aside the criticisms, hoping that the bill’s promised economic growth will vindicate its approach. But the brewing tension between Trump and Musk may have deeper implications, especially among fiscally conservative voters and Silicon Valley influencers.

Support from Capitol Hill Critics

Musk’s message quickly found allies among Capitol Hill’s fiscal hawks. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a libertarian-leaning congressman known for his opposition to runaway government spending, was one of only two Republicans to vote against the bill.

In response to Musk’s post, Massie tweeted: “He’s right.”

Musk simply replied: “Simple math.”

Their brief but emphatic exchange highlights the divide within the GOP itself between pro-growth populists who favor large stimulus-like spending and traditional conservatives who emphasize budgetary restraint.

In another sign of discord, President Trump lashed out at Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), another fierce budget hawk, after Paul criticized the bill’s inclusion of a multi-trillion-dollar increase to the debt ceiling. Trump, in typical fashion, dismissed Paul’s concerns, claiming the bill would generate:

“Tremendous GROWTH.”

Paul has long warned that such promises rarely translate into fiscal reality. In recent comments, he likened the current bill to “economic malpractice,” especially in light of persistently high inflation and increasing interest on the national debt.

While Trump’s administration has heralded the bill as a necessary reset to spur economic revival, critics argue that the legislation is riddled with problems:

  • Massive tax cuts for corporations and high-income earners
  • Discretionary spending boosts for defense, infrastructure, and select entitlement programs
  • No clear offsets to balance the cuts, thereby increasing the national deficit
  • Inclusion of earmarks and “pork” projects, often used to win votes in specific districts

These inclusions have raised eyebrows across the political spectrum, with many warning that the bill sacrifices long-term stability for short-term political gain.

Elon Musk’s outburst isn’t just about economics, it’s about the credibility of fiscal leadership in Washington. His defection from the Trump administration’s latest policy push could embolden other tech and business leaders to speak up. With the 2024 election in the rear-view mirror and policy battles heating up, this moment could mark a turning point in the uneasy alliance between Trump and one of his most influential supporters.

In the end, whether this bill delivers “tremendous growth” or balloons the national deficit as Musk predicts, one thing is clear: the battle over America’s fiscal future is far from over.
