Tesla, the electric vehicle company led by billionaire Elon Musk, has been handed one of its toughest legal defeats to date. A federal jury in Miami awarded $243 million in damages in connection with a 2019 fatal crash involving a Tesla Model S that was operating on its Autopilot driver-assistance system.

Court documents revealed that Tesla had the chance to resolve the case earlier through a $60 million settlement proposal, which it rejected. That decision paved the way for a trial that ultimately produced a much larger financial blow.

The Crash That Sparked the Lawsuit

The case stemmed from an accident in April 2019. A Tesla Model S collided with a parked Chevrolet Tahoe on the shoulder of the road, striking two people standing nearby.

The crash killed Naibel Benavides Leon, while her boyfriend Dillon Angulo was left with serious injuries. Their families filed a lawsuit against Tesla, alleging that the company’s Autopilot system contributed to the tragedy by failing to prevent the collision.

Breakdown of the Damages

Following deliberations, jurors awarded:

  • $129 million in compensatory damages to cover the losses of the victims’ families.
  • $200 million in punitive damages, intended as punishment for Tesla’s role.

Under the ruling:

  • Tesla was assigned 33% of compensatory damages, equating to about $42.6 million.
  • The driver of the Tesla, though not named as a defendant, was deemed responsible for the remaining 67%.
  • Tesla was held fully responsible for the $200 million punitive damages.

The size of the punitive damages highlighted the jury’s view that Tesla’s actions warranted a sharp penalty.

Settlement Rejection Surfaces

In new filings, plaintiffs’ lawyers disclosed that Tesla could have avoided trial by accepting a $60 million settlement proposal submitted on May 30, 2024. The company declined, and the case proceeded to a full trial.

Because the verdict greatly exceeded the offer, the plaintiffs are now seeking to recover their legal fees under Florida law, which allows for fee recovery if a rejected settlement is followed by a significantly higher award.

Neither Tesla nor its attorneys provided comment on the rejected settlement, and lawyers for the plaintiffs also declined to elaborate after the trial.

Tesla’s Position and Appeal

Tesla has consistently denied wrongdoing in the case. The company maintains that Autopilot was not to blame for the 2019 crash, attributing responsibility to driver behavior. After the verdict, Tesla announced its plans to appeal the ruling, signaling that the legal battle is far from over.

The company has argued that such verdicts could hinder progress in developing advanced driver-assistance technologies across the auto industry.

A First of Its Kind

This lawsuit carried particular significance because it was the first trial involving the wrongful death of a third party linked to Tesla’s Autopilot system. While Tesla has faced numerous lawsuits tied to crashes and fatalities, most were settled confidentially or dismissed before trial.

The Miami verdict therefore stands out as a landmark case, potentially shaping how future claims involving automated driving technology are handled in U.S. courts.

Autopilot Under Ongoing Scrutiny

Tesla’s Autopilot system, which provides automated steering, lane centering, and braking assistance, has been a core feature of its vehicles for years. However, its safety record continues to raise concerns.

Regulators, including the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), have opened multiple investigations into crashes involving Tesla vehicles using Autopilot, some of which resulted in fatalities. Critics argue that Tesla’s branding and marketing often lead drivers to assume Autopilot is fully autonomous, when in fact the system still requires active human supervision.

Broader Implications for Tesla and the Auto Industry

The Miami ruling adds another layer of complexity for Tesla, which is already facing:

  • Ongoing lawsuits in other states over Autopilot-related accidents.
  • Regulatory reviews of its “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) beta program, still being tested on public roads.
  • Investor concerns over how litigation risks could affect the company’s financial performance and public image.

Legal experts suggest that the large punitive damages award could influence how automakers market and deploy advanced driver-assistance systems going forward.

Tesla’s rejection of the $60 million settlement has now escalated into a much larger judgment. Even so, the company’s appeal could delay any final resolution for years.

The outcome of the appeal may also determine whether more plaintiffs feel emboldened to take similar cases to trial, rather than settling early. At the same time, Tesla may face pressure to reassess its handling of legal disputes and how it communicates the capabilities of its technology to the public.
