Facing Takezo in Ghost of Yotei is one of those fights that separates casual players from those who master the art of timing, patience, and preparation. He is a formidable opponent, but with the right strategy, gear, and mindset, you can overcome him. Below is a guide — written in clear, human language — to help you win this duel.

Takezo is a powerful optional boss in Ghost of Yotei, encountered in the mythic tales “Takezo the Unrivalled” and “The Five Teachings.” He wields dual katanas and has a versatile, aggressive move set. His attacks are fast, often telegraphed, and can kill you in just a couple of hits if you don’t defend smartly.
He also has a special ability: when his health drops below a certain threshold (roughly one‐third), the environment changes (a blizzard effect), which affects your maximum health and stability.
So, you’ll need to be ready for both phases — before and after that shift.
Gear, Charms, and Loadout: Build for Success
Before entering the fight, you must prepare properly.
Armor & Charms
- Equip Bounty Master Armor (or similarly high‐parry armor). This armor has perks that reward perfect parries with follow-up attacks, giving you windows to dish out damage safely.
- Use charms that widen your parry/dodge windows or boost survivability. Examples include:
- Charm of Futsunushi (makes perfect parries/dodges easier)
- Charm of Mount Yotei (reduces incoming damage)
- Charm of Last Chance or Charm of Healing (to recover or survive lethal blows)
Combining the right armor and charms gives you more leeway to survive mistakes.
Weapons & Tools
- Use Katana or Dual Katana in this duel. Since Takezo fights with dual katanas, matching his style helps you remain effective in attack and defense.
- Make use of quickfire weapons such as Kunai or Tanzutsu to stagger him momentarily and interrupt his flow.
- Use Oni Flame (or fire attacks) to amplify your damage output during windows of opportunity.
- Learn and use Onryo’s Strike to disarm him. When you manage to strip Takezo’s weapons, he becomes vulnerable and you can press your attack.
Also, carry Sake (spirit restoring items) so that you can maintain your Spirit level for using special techniques.
Fight Strategy: phases & tactics
When the duel begins, there are two main phases: before blizzard and after blizzard.
Phase 1: Normal Conditions
- Keep your distance wisely
Many players have found that keeping moderate distance causes Takezo to initiate his aggression, giving you clearer windows to counter. > “Keep your distance… he will always do an attack to try and close the distance.” - Read his moves, parry or dodge
- Many of his attacks are telegraphed: blue glow attacks can be parried.
- Some attacks (yellow glow, or unblockable ones) must be dodged rather than parried. Don’t force a parry if it’s unsafe.
- After a successful parry, follow up with your own strikes (the armor’s perk may give you multiple hits).
- Interrupt with quickfire weapons
Use Kunai or similar tools to stagger him when his guard is open. These interruptions can break his rhythm. - Use disarm when it’s safe
When he launches a heavy or long wind-up move, use Onryo’s Strike to remove his dual katanas. That grants you a window to press advantage. - Retreat and reset
After striking, don’t overcommit. Pull back, re-evaluate, and avoid letting him overwhelm you. Patience is your ally.
Phase 2: Blizzard & Critical Health
Once Takezo drops to about one third health, a blizzard sets in. This has important consequences:
- Your max health is reduced — you become more vulnerable to finishing blows.
- His stagger threshold lowers — he becomes more susceptible to perfect parries or stagger hits.
- He may change or add attacks — stay vigilant and don’t rely on early tactics alone.
In this phase:
- Place extra emphasis on perfect parries. The window might be tighter, so timing is critical.
- Use Spirit Attacks when you see attacks you’re unsure how to defend against; these often grant invincibility frames and can interrupt him.
- Keep reapplying Oni Flame or fire attacks when possible.
- If you disarmed him earlier, try to strip him again during this weakened state.
- Be more cautious: avoid risky moves that might leave you open.
