The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remains one of Nintendo’s most famous adventure games, but how long does it actually take to finish? The answer depends on how you play. A player focused mainly on the story can expect roughly 20 to 30 hours, while someone exploring Hyrule, completing side quests, and collecting optional items can spend closer to 35 to 40 hours. Players who move quickly or already know the game can finish considerably faster.

How Long Is Ocarina Of Time?

For a typical first playthrough, around 25 to 30 hours is a reasonable target for completing the main adventure. This includes solving dungeon puzzles, finding important items, learning songs, exploring new areas, and defeating the major bosses. The exact time can change significantly depending on how familiar you are with Zelda games.

Current community playtime estimates generally place the main story in the mid-to-high 20-hour range. Some players may finish in about 20 hours, while others can take 30 hours or more because they spend extra time exploring or figuring out puzzles without a guide.

If you are playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the first time, planning for about 25 hours is a sensible estimate.

How Long To 100% Ocarina Of Time?

A complete playthrough takes longer because Ocarina of Time has plenty of optional content. Aiming for roughly 35 to 40 hours should give most players enough time to finish the major optional objectives alongside the main story.

A completion-focused run can include:

  • Collecting Heart Pieces and increasing your maximum health
  • Finding Gold Skulltulas throughout Hyrule
  • Completing optional quests and challenges
  • Obtaining useful optional equipment and upgrades
  • Exploring areas that are not strictly required for the story
  • Finding additional bottles, items, and rewards

There is no single official definition of 100% completion, so completion times can vary. Some players consider every collectible essential, while others focus only on major upgrades and side quests. Because of that, a particularly thorough run can move beyond 40 hours.

What Makes Ocarina Of Time Take So Long?

The game’s length is not based only on its story. Much of the adventure comes from exploration and puzzle solving. You regularly need to search for new routes, understand dungeon mechanics, use specific equipment, and return to earlier areas after gaining new abilities.

The game also divides Link’s adventure between childhood and adulthood. This time-based progression changes which areas, characters, items, and abilities are available. Learning how these systems connect can make a first playthrough slower than a repeat run.

The dungeons are another major part of the experience. Each one introduces its own puzzles, enemies, navigation challenges, and boss encounter. Players unfamiliar with older Zelda design may spend extra time working out what an item is meant to do or where it should be used.

Can You Beat Ocarina Of Time Faster?

Absolutely. Experienced players can complete the game much faster because they already know the dungeon layouts, puzzle solutions, item locations, and story progression. A player following a detailed walkthrough can also reduce the time spent searching for objectives.

A rushed playthrough can take well under 20 hours, although that approach skips much of what makes the game enjoyable. Ocarina of Time rewards curiosity, so rushing from one required objective to another is a very different experience from exploring Hyrule naturally.
