Mazda has lifted the curtain on the Vision-X Coupe at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, revealing a concept car that doesn’t just look toward 2035, it feels built for it. This four-door grand tourer redefines Mazda’s design and engineering ambitions, blending the company’s signature emotional styling with an experimental, eco-forward powertrain that literally cleans the air as it drives.

A New Chapter for Kodo Design

Mazda’s design evolution has always been subtle yet deliberate, and the Vision-X Coupe continues that lineage. The car refines the brand’s Kodo – Soul of Motion philosophy rather than reinventing it. The front fascia stands out with a fully enclosed grille, sliced by fang-like chrome accents and framed by sharp, almost predatory headlights.

In profile, the Vision-X is pure sculpture, streamlined, smooth, and devoid of excess. Gone are traditional door handles and mirrors, replaced by clean surfaces that channel airflow effortlessly. The steeply raked windshield flows into a long, coupe-like roofline, tapering into a minimalist rear deck and a set of sleek, expressive taillights.

At 5,050 mm long and 1,995 mm wide, it’s a substantial car, larger than the Mazda6 and even the once-segment-defining Mercedes-Benz CLS. Clearly, Mazda’s not aiming small here; this is a statement of scale and ambition.

Minimalism Meets Emotion Inside

While most modern interiors drown drivers in screens, Mazda’s concept takes a more considered route. The Vision-X’s cabin celebrates digital craftsmanship with human warmth. Its triple-screen instrument cluster features retro-inspired graphics, while an additional display is subtly integrated into the steering wheel itself.

A broad center console houses a tactile, baseball-stitched gear shifter, an intentional nod to Mazda’s devotion to driving feel. Two sculpted rear seats, two-tone upholstery, and elegant metal accents complete a cabin that feels equal parts analog and futuristic.

Mazda seems to be making a point: technology should elevate the driving experience, not sterilize it.

Rotary Revival: Turbocharged and Electrified

After years of speculation, Mazda has officially revived the rotary engine, but not in its traditional form. The Vision-X uses a turbocharged rotary engine as part of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, paired with an electric motor and a yet-to-be-detailed battery pack.

Together, they deliver an impressive 503 horsepower and an electric-only range of 99 miles (160 km). The total driving range tops 497 miles (800 km), which puts this concept firmly in grand touring territory.

The World’s First Carbon-Capturing Car

The most radical idea isn’t under the hood, it’s in the air around it. Mazda claims the Vision-X Coupe actually cleans the atmosphere while driving. The system works by using carbon-neutral fuel made from microalgae, combined with a proprietary CO₂ capture technology that filters emissions directly from the exhaust.

According to CEO Masahiro Moro, microalgae not only absorb CO₂ during growth but also produce oils that can be converted into fuel. What remains can be reused as fertilizer or even food, an elegant example of circular design thinking.

A Vision Worth Building

The Mazda Vision-X Coupe isn’t just a concept; it’s a manifesto. It bridges heritage and innovation, reminding the world that sustainability and passion can coexist. While production isn’t confirmed, the message is clear: Mazda’s future will be driven by emotion, powered by innovation, and maybe, just maybe, capable of cleaning the air we breathe.
