The future of automated online shopping may be upon us sooner than we expect, driven by AI and crypto. In the past week, the number of transactions being made by AI-enabled “agents” using a new payment protocol created by Coinbase has risen more than 4,300%, suggesting the arrival of a new “agentic economy.” Sources from x402scan.com indicate the dramatic growth of activity on Coinbase’s x402 protocol. The number of transactions in one week alone has reached just under 957,000. The number of AI agents, conducting purchasing of goods and/or services through the protocol has grown over 30,000% and over 368%, respectively, in one week period. This data supports a growing interest in the use of blockchain technologies to facilitate smooth machine-to-machine payments.
What is x402? A Pay-Per-Use Layer for the Web
Launched by Coinbase in May, the x402 protocol isn’t a new blockchain but rather a clever layer built on top of the existing internet infrastructure – specifically, the HTTP protocol that powers the World Wide Web.
Many developers are familiar with the “HTTP 402 Payment Required” error code, a placeholder indicating a requested resource needs payment. X402 creates an opportunity from the error code. It enables AI agents that receive this code to pay the requisite fee in cryptocurrency instantly – and often with near-zero fees – potentially on any blockchain.
Most importantly, x402 removes the more traditional barriers of having to create a user account, manage a subscription, and log in. As Gregor Frick, a partner at crypto venture firm Renaud Partners, explained on X, “The web as we know it was never designed for small, programmatic payments… X402 allows you to pay automatically, per request, directly over HTTP… Think of it as a pay-per-use layer for the internet itself.”
Explosive Growth, Tiny Transactions
While the nearly one million transactions in a week sound impressive, the total dollar value processed remains quite small – just $1.1 million. According to the data, fewer than 100 of these transactions were valued at over $100.
However, analysts stress that this is precisely the point. X402 is designed for micropayments, enabling AI agents to pay tiny amounts for specific data access, API calls, or digital services on demand. The high transaction count, rather than the total value, is the key indicator of adoption for this specific use case. Reflecting this growing niche, crypto data provider CoinGecko even began tracking crypto assets associated with agents using x402 this past Saturday.
Big Tech Jumps In: Google and Cloudflare Lend Support
The promise of x402 has not escaped the notice of the major technology players. In September, Google announced that it would include the x402 protocol within its own agentic payment system, which it refers to as AP2. This integration could further accelerate adoption if Google rolls out agent-based services.
Shortly after that, Cloudflare, an internet infrastructure giant, announced NET Dollar, a USD-backed stablecoin that will utilize the x402 protocol to facilitate payments for its broad network. Having the endorsement of such reputable technology behemoths brings much credibility and potential scale to Coinbase’s protocol and the value of the NET Dollar.
The Dawning Agentic Economy
This aspect contributes to an overarching vision within the tech and crypto communities known as the “agentic economy.” The vision is that increasingly sophisticated AI agents (or bots) are going to carry out autonomous work on behalf of users—from online purchasing and scheduling to complex financial management.
For the agentic economy to operate, these agents need a native way to pay for the resources they consume while in the online space. The crypto industry argues that using blockchain and enabling protocols such as x402 is the best infrastructure for this; blockchain-based payments can happen without needing a traditional bank and therefore have the advantage of being instant, low-cost and programmable. The Ethereum Foundation dAI team and Consensys’s agent coordination protocol are other initiatives working to help establish blockchains as the settlement layer for the emerging AI-based economy.
Small Change, Big Shift?
Even though the dollar figures moving through x402 are small today, the marked growth in transaction volume is an encouraging sign. It conveys that developers are actively messing around with AI agents capable of self-directed economic activity.
If this trend in continuing, protocols like x402 could completely alter how online services are monetized, utilizing increasingly fine-grained, pay-per-use interactions that can be managed by AI, rather than huge subscription fees. It’s still early days, but the bots are starting, in tiny amounts, to pay for themselves.
