Surviving Shredder encounters in ARC Raiders isn’t easy — but with the right strategy, weapons, and positioning, you can turn a terrifying showdown into a manageable fight. Below is a full guide to defeating Shredder: how it behaves, where it’s dangerous, and how to kill it effectively while staying alive.

What is the Shredder and why it’s dangerous
- The Shredder is a close-quarters ARC unit found especially inside the complex areas of certain maps.
- It hovers just above the ground and is fully armored, making it resistant to light weapons.
- Its main attack is a devastating 360° shrapnel blast — a shotgun-style burst that sweeps everything around. That blast can shred shields and HP quickly, especially in tight corridors.
- In close quarters, or if you get caught without cover, Shredder can take down even prepared players fast.
Because of its heavy armor and lethal area-damage attack, Shredder is not a foe you want to fight carelessly.
Know the Weakness — don’t shoot the “eye”
Many players instinctively aim for Shredder’s front or glowing parts — but that’s a mistake. That “eye” or frontal plate is heavily armored and takes a lot of shots for little effect.
The real weak points are the thrusters — the underside turbine and maneuvering engine ports around its body. Damaging these thrusters cripples its mobility, slows it down, and makes its attacks much easier to avoid or counter.
When thrusters are destroyed or badly damaged, the Shredder can sag, lose balance or hover sluggishly — giving you a much wider window to finish it.
Gear and Weapons: what to bring to each fight
To tackle a Shredder confidently, you need to come prepared. Light guns such as SMGs and pistols are poor choices — they generally don’t penetrate Shredder’s plating and waste ammo.
Better choices include:
- Heavy-ammo rifles or weapons with good ARC-armor penetration — these hit thrusters hard.
- Shotguns or close-to-mid-range weapons can stagger or push Shredder back when you hit thrusters, but you must keep safe distance.
- Throwable explosives — especially sticky or “Snap Blast” grenades. Two well-placed grenades on its body or near it can destroy a Shredder outright.
Snap Blast grenades are often the easiest, most reliable choice: they’re cheap to craft or buy, stick to surfaces, and deal heavy explosive damage.
Tactics & Strategy — how to fight smarter
Here’s a reliable plan you can follow to fight a Shredder:
- Keep distance: Since Shredder’s attack is close-range and area-effect, staying at mid-range or beyond reduces risk significantly. Use ranged or explosive weapons rather than rushing in.
- Use cover and terrain: Pillars, crates, doorways — use anything that completely blocks line-of-sight. When Shredder charges up its shrapnel blast, get behind solid cover. That blast needs a clear line-of-sight to hit you.
- Target thrusters: Wait for it to hover or approach, then aim heavy shots at its underside turbine or side thrusters. Once those are damaged, its mobility — and threat level — drops drastically.
- Use explosives wisely: Throw Snap Blast grenades (or equivalents) onto its body or floor when it’s about to charge; keep your distance until they detonate. Two grenades are often enough to wipe it out.
- If playing solo — consider avoiding: Solo players with light gear and no explosives should avoid Shredder altogether, unless necessary — the risk is high and reward small compared to the danger.
- In a squad — coordinate for fast kills: One player can bait or distract while others aim thrusters or throw grenades. Once mobility is disabled, the Shredder falls fast under concentrated fire.
When fighting Shredder — what to avoid
- Don’t waste ammo shooting its front or “eye” — that’s heavily armored and ineffective.
- Don’t stand in open spaces, narrow corridors or corners where dodging or cover is impossible. Close quarters are Shredder’s advantage.
- Don’t rush in without plan — Shredder’s shotgun-blast can shred shields and HP fast; rushing in with light weapons is almost guaranteed death.
Why it’s worth fighting Shredder
If you defeat a Shredder, you get valuable loot — including ARC alloy, power cells, components, and even rare items like “Shredder Gyro” which are useful for crafting advanced gear.
For players with appropriate gear, explosives, and care — a Shredder encounter becomes a profitable risk rather than a death trap.
