In a milestone year for the smartphone industry, Apple emerged as the world’s leading smartphone maker in 2025, capturing 20% of global shipments. The company’s strong performance driven by demand for its latest iPhone lineup and growth in key regions helped lift the overall market even as competition remained stiff and economic conditions varied widely across countries.

Global smartphone shipments modestly increased about 2% year-on-year in 2025, marking a second consecutive year of growth after earlier market stagnation. Counterpoint analysts said that the positive result reflected improving economic momentum in emerging markets and continued consumer interest in 5G-capable devices.

How Apple Took the Lead

Apple’s 20% market share in 2025 was the highest among the top five global brands tracked by Counterpoint Research enough to put it ahead of long-time rival Samsung. A key reason for Apple’s leadership was the strong performance of its iPhone 17 series, particularly in the fourth quarter when the newest models launched and bolstered holiday sales. The momentum from the iPhone 17 series helped Apple secure its position at the top of the shipment charts for the full year.

While Apple’s premium handset strategy often limits volume compared with brands that focus on lower-priced models, its balanced performance across both mature and emerging markets pushed it ahead. Analysts noted robust demand not only in North America and Western Europe but also in expanding smartphone markets including India, Japan, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Middle East and Africa.

Complementing iPhone 17 sales, Apple’s earlier iPhone 16 lineup continued to perform well in several regions, contributing to the company’s overall shipment tally for the year. By capturing consumer interest across multiple price and feature tiers, Apple benefited from a broader upgrade cycle that saw many users replacing older devices.

Samsung and Xiaomi: Closest Competitors

Samsung, long the leader in global smartphone shipments, finished second in 2025 with about 19% market share. The South Korean firm saw modest shipment growth compared with the previous year boosted by steady demand for its mid-range Galaxy A series and continued interest in its premium Galaxy S and foldable devices. However, Samsung’s growth was not fast enough to retake overall leadership from Apple in 2025.

In third place was Xiaomi, which held roughly 13% of global smartphone shipments during the year. Xiaomi’s performance remained strong, particularly in price-competitive segments in emerging markets, where consistent demand helped it maintain its position among the top global vendors. Other brands like vivo and OPPO continued to compete regionally, though they trailed behind the top three in overall shipment share.

Market Trends Behind the Numbers

Counterpoint’s analysis highlights several broader trends that shaped the smartphone market in 2025:

1. Growth Driven by Emerging and Mid-Sized Markets

Although mature markets such as the United States and Western Europe still account for significant smartphone revenue, much of the shipment growth came from emerging regions. Nations in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and parts of Latin America saw rising consumer demand as economic conditions improved and more people adopted 5G devices. This helped offset softness in some developed areas where smartphone penetration remains high.

2. Premiumization and the iPhone Advantage

Unlike some competitors that focus heavily on budget and mid-range segments, Apple’s continued strength in premium devices particularly with advanced cameras, performance, and ecosystem integration translated into solid shipments. While premium phones are typically more expensive than average devices, demand for high-end models did not wane in 2025, especially among users upgrading older phones or switching platforms.

3. Front-Loading Shipments to Avoid Tariffs

Earlier in 2025, many manufacturers accelerated shipments to avoid potential tariffs and trade disruptions. Companies moved inventory forward in anticipation of regulatory changes that might affect pricing or market access. However, this “front-loading” effect was more pronounced in the first half of the year and had a limited impact on second-half shipments overall.

Regional Performances and Consumer Behavior

While overall global data reflects broad trends, regional patterns tell a more nuanced story:

  • United States: Apple maintained strong leadership in the U.S., where iPhones remain highly popular and carriers promote tiered financing options that encourage upgrades.
  • India and Southeast Asia: Both iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 devices found traction in India and Southeast Asia, a testament to Apple’s expanding footprint in markets historically dominated by Android brands.
  • Japan: Apple continued to perform well in Japan, where its ecosystem and brand loyalty contribute to consistently strong market share.
  • Europe: Samsung and Android rivals remain competitive in parts of Western and Central Europe, though Apple’s premium focus resonates with many consumers there.

Despite the milestone of leading in 2025, Counterpoint Research warns that 2026 may be a tougher year for the global smartphone market. Two major headwinds are expected to constrain growth:

Chip Shortages and Supply Constraints

Shortages of key components such as memory chips (DRAM and NAND) and other semiconductors could tighten supply and elevate production costs. These shortages stem partly from chipmakers prioritising capacity for AI data centre infrastructure rather than smartphones, a shift reflecting broader industry demands and emerging technologies.

Rising Component Costs

As chip and component prices rise, manufacturers may face pressure to raise smartphone prices or accept thinner margins. This could dampen demand, particularly in price-sensitive markets where consumers are less willing to pay a premium for incremental upgrades.

Taken together, these factors have prompted analysts to predict that the smartphone market may soften in 2026, reversing the modest growth seen in 2024 and 2025. Even so, companies with strong brand loyalty and premium market positions like Apple and Samsung are expected to weather these challenges better than smaller rivals.

Apple’s leading position in 2025 underscores the enduring appeal of its ecosystem and product strategy. By prioritising innovation, refining hardware and software integration, and expanding its presence in diverse markets, Apple managed to edge ahead of competitors in a field where shifts of just a few percentage points can indicate major strategic success.

For the industry at large, Apple’s ascent signals a shift toward premiumisation, 5G adoption, and diversified regional demand trends that will shape how manufacturers plan new launches, marketing strategies, and supply chain investments in the years to come.

As the smartphone landscape evolves, all eyes will be on how Apple sustains its momentum and how rivals adapt in a market that is increasingly defined by technology, price segmentation, and changing consumer expectations.
