Lucid Recalls 4,000 Gravity SUVs Over Seat Belt Weld Issue

Lucid Motors has issued a recall affecting more than 4,000 of its Gravity SUVs after discovering that some second-row seat belt anchors may not have been properly welded. The issue, identified during routine safety testing, raises concerns about passenger protection in the event of a crash.

The recall marks another quality checkpoint for Lucid as the company works to scale production of its first electric SUV and strengthen confidence among early buyers.

Issue Discovered During Safety Testing

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Lucid identified the problem during unrelated safety testing in January. Engineers discovered that certain second-row seat belt anchors might not meet the company’s strength requirements due to incomplete welds.

While no accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported, improperly welded seat belt anchors could increase the risk of injury during a collision. Seat belts rely heavily on secure anchor points to keep passengers restrained, and any weakness in that structure can compromise safety.

Lucid says it moved quickly to investigate the root cause after detecting the issue.

Supplier Process Change Triggered Problem

Lucid traced the issue back to a manufacturing change made by a seat supplier. According to the company, the supplier altered part of its production process without notifying or receiving approval from Lucid.

That change led to inconsistent weld quality in some vehicles produced before February 14, 2026. The supplier has since reverted to Lucid’s original manufacturing specifications.

This type of supplier-related issue is not uncommon in the automotive industry, especially as newer automakers ramp up production and work with multiple suppliers. Still, recalls tied to safety components tend to draw particular scrutiny.

Vehicles Affected by the Recall

Lucid confirmed that only Gravity SUVs manufactured before February 14, 2026, are affected. The company estimates that more than 4,000 vehicles fall under the recall.

Owners of impacted vehicles will be contacted directly. Lucid will inspect the second-row seat belt anchors and determine the appropriate fix. Depending on the inspection results, technicians may either install a reinforcement bracket or replace the entire seat assembly.

The company noted that repairs will be carried out at no cost to customers.

Lucid’s Growing Pains Continue

The recall comes at a time when Lucid is working to expand its footprint beyond the Air sedan. The Gravity SUV represents a critical product for the company, aimed at boosting sales and competing in the rapidly growing luxury electric SUV segment.

Lucid had previously addressed early software and hardware issues during Gravity’s initial rollout. This latest recall suggests the company is still navigating the complexities that come with scaling production.

That said, proactively identifying and addressing safety concerns is generally seen as a positive sign for automakers. Early detection helps prevent potential risks and demonstrates a commitment to customer safety.

For now, Lucid says it remains focused on resolving the issue quickly and ensuring future vehicles meet its quality standards.
