Jeep may be bringing back something enthusiasts thought was gone for good. The manual transmission, quietly dropped from the Jeep Gladiator in 2024, now appears poised for a return. And while the company hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, the signals are strong enough to get manual lovers excited again.

According to a report from CarBuzz, Jeep’s global head of off-road capability, Aamir Ahmed, hinted that a Wrangler-like vehicle will soon regain its manual gearbox. While he didn’t directly name the Gladiator, the clues were hard to miss.

“We have another car that looks like a Wrangler that’s getting its manual back. Stay tuned,” Ahmed reportedly said.

Given the Gladiator’s close relationship with the Wrangler, it doesn’t take much to connect the dots.

A Short-Lived Goodbye

Jeep discontinued the manual transmission option for the Gladiator in 2024, leaving enthusiasts disappointed. At the time, the move felt like another step toward the slow fade of stick-shift vehicles, especially in the pickup segment, where manuals are already rare.

Jeep never publicly clarified the exact reason behind the removal. Industry observers speculated that declining demand, emissions considerations, and production complexity may have played a role. Regardless, the decision left the Gladiator available only with automatic transmissions, a shift that didn’t sit well with purists.

Now, the possible return suggests Jeep is listening.

Jeep’s Manual Legacy Still Matters

Manual transmissions have always been part of Jeep’s identity, particularly for the Wrangler. Since the model’s launch in 1987, Jeep has consistently offered a stick-shift option. Even today, manual gearboxes remain available on V-6-powered Wrangler variants.

More importantly, Jeep recently reinforced its enthusiasm for manuals with the Wrangler Laredo Concept unveiled at the brand’s 60th annual Easter Safari in Moab, Utah. The concept featured a manual transmission, signaling that Jeep still values driver engagement and off-road control.

That move now feels less like nostalgia and more like a preview.

Likely Limited to V-6 Models

If the manual transmission does return to the Gladiator, it will almost certainly be paired with the 3.6-liter V-6 engine. That’s consistent with Jeep’s current approach on the Wrangler lineup, where manual gearboxes are limited to V-6 configurations.

Hybrid and turbocharged variants are unlikely to get manual options, given packaging and engineering constraints. For enthusiasts, though, the V-6 manual combination remains the sweet spot.

A Rare Choice in the Pickup Market

The return of the Gladiator manual would also double the number of manual pickup trucks available in the U.S. market. Right now, the Toyota Tacoma stands alone as the only pickup offering a manual transmission.

If Jeep follows through, buyers looking for a more engaging driving experience will once again have options. And in an era dominated by automatics and electrification, that’s becoming increasingly rare.

A Move That Speaks to Enthusiasts

Jeep has built its reputation on rugged capability and driver involvement. Bringing back the manual Gladiator aligns perfectly with that identity. It also shows that even as the industry moves toward automation and electrification, there’s still room for vehicles that prioritize engagement and control.

For now, Jeep is keeping details under wraps. But if Ahmed’s comments are anything to go by, the manual Gladiator’s return may not be far off.

And for stick-shift fans, that’s more than enough reason to stay tuned.
