Apple Hikes MacBook And iPad Prices By Up To $200 As AI Data Centre Boom Triggers Global Memory Chip Crisis

Apple has broken from one of its most consistent product promises. Apple raised iPad and MacBook prices on Thursday, saying it could no longer shield customers from rising memory and storage chip costs driven by the AI industry’s datacenter buildout. The announcement landed on June 25, 2026 just months after the company had launched its most affordable laptop yet and sent a clear signal that even the world’s most powerful consumer electronics supply chain has hit its limits in absorbing what the industry is calling “RAMageddon.”

Apple boosted the price of some laptop and tablet models by $200 or more. The base model of the MacBook Pro, for example, is now $1,999, up from $1,699. Apple’s entry-level notebook, the MacBook Neo, is now priced at $699, up $100 from when it was first introduced in March. The price of an iPad Air rose $150 to $749, while the iPad Pro rose $200 to $1,199. The change has no impact on Apple’s largest revenue generator, the iPhone, but the breadth of the rise across the Mac and iPad lines is the most major product pricing action the company has made in years.

“Apple today dramatically increased device prices across multiple product lines — MacBook Neo up $100, MacBook Air up $200, MacBook Pro up $300, iPad Air up $150, iPad Pro up $200. The iPhone is not affected. Apple cites surging memory and storage component costs driven by AI datacenter demand.”~MacRumors (@MacRumors)

“RAMageddon”: The Memory Crisis That Made These Hikes Inevitable

The root of Apple’s pricing adjustment is not a usual supply chain disruption; rather, it is the direct result of the AI industry’s voracious demand for memory. According to industry tracker TrendForce, prices for dynamic random access memory, which is utilized in almost all modern electronic products, increased by up to 98% in the first quarter of 2026 and are expected to rise by another 58% to 63% in the current quarter. That jump, called “RAMageddon” by some analysts, has been fueled by a rush in AI data center building, with businesses such as Nvidia signing long-term contracts with memory manufacturers vying for increased capacity.

The mechanics are straightforward. AI chipmakers like Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices have demanded more of the components for their own chips, which are then used in data centers for developing and running AI systems. Memory makers such as Micron have responded by prioritising these high-volume, high-margin AI orders leaving consumer electronics manufacturers scrambling for supply at significantly elevated prices.

Micron revealed on Wednesday that it has received $22 billion in long-term pledges from clients looking to secure their memory supplies. Apple, which sources massive amounts of DRAM and NAND flash storage for each device it ships, sees competing with AI data center operators for the same finite pool of memory capacity as a completely new competitive scenario that its traditional supply chain relationships and volume purchasing power cannot fully offset.

“Apple announces significant price increases for MacBooks, iPads and more — MacBook Neo now starts at $699, MacBook Air at $1,299, MacBook Pro at $1,999, iPad Air at $749, iPad Pro at $1,199. Apple cites soaring memory and storage chip costs driven by AI buildout.”~9to5Mac (@9to5mac)

iPhone Spared For Now But Tim Cook Warned This Was Coming:

The decision to raise Mac and iPad prices while leaving iPhone pricing unchanged is a calculated one. Last week, Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that price hikes for Apple’s products were “unavoidable,” as memory and storage component prices keep rising because of the AI boom. During the company’s earnings call in April, Cook alluded that for iPhones, the company was facing constraints on the main processing chip rather than memory.

The iPhone’s temporary exemption from the price raise reflects the smartphone market’s competitive sensitivity, where even a little price increase can influence purchasing decisions in regions such as India and Southeast Asia, where Apple has made gains. Mac and iPad buyers, who tend to be more brand-committed and less price-sensitive at the margin, are better positioned to absorb increases without the same degree of demand destruction.

The rising costs are expected to weigh heavily on device sales this year, with research firm IDC estimating that the smartphone market would see its biggest-ever annual decline of nearly 14% this year while the PC market will fall 11.3%. Apple’s price increases arrive precisely as the broader consumer electronics industry is already bracing for a demand downturn driven by the same cost pressures.

“Apple raises Mac and iPad prices, spares iPhone for now. MacBook Neo jumps from $599 to $699, MacBook Pro from $1,699 to $1,999, iPad Air from $599 to $749. Tim Cook had warned last week that price hikes were unavoidable amid the AI memory crunch.”~TechCrunch (@TechCrunch)

Apple Is Not Alone: Microsoft, Valve, And The Broader Electronics Repricing

Apple’s statement was not made in isolation. Microsoft said that Xbox costs would rise by $100 to $150 each system, and that it would discontinue the more costly $800 model. Valve, a PC gaming company, also introduced their new Steam Machine product at costs reflecting the raised component environment, showing that the memory cost shock is affecting every section of the consumer electronics market at the same time.

“The consumer electronics industry is facing an unprecedented challenge,” Apple said in a statement. “The company has shielded customers from increases thus far. But we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including today’s increases for iPad and Mac.”

“The memory environment is tough and remains structurally tough for the foreseeable future,” said Ben Bajarin, CEO of technology consulting firm Creative Strategies. For consumers who were planning to upgrade a MacBook or iPad in the coming months, the June 25 price changes have made that decision considerably more expensive and Apple’s own statement leaves little ambiguity about whether further increases are possible later this year as memory prices continue their upward trajectory.
