Snorlax is one of the most popular and useful Pokémon you can add to your team in Pokémon FireRed. This giant Normal-type Pokémon has massive HP, excellent overall durability, and a powerful move pool that makes it valuable throughout the main story and even after becoming the Champion. However, many players struggle to figure out how to wake it up, where to find it, and the best way to catch it without accidentally knocking it out.

Where to Find Snorlax
There are only two Snorlax available in Pokémon FireRed. Unlike regular wild Pokémon, these are special stationary encounters that block important paths across the Kanto region.
You can find them at:
- Route 12, south of Lavender Town
- Route 16, west of Celadon City
Both Snorlax are level 30. Since there are only two chances to catch one, it is important to prepare before starting the battle.
How to Get the Poké Flute
You cannot battle Snorlax immediately because it is asleep. To wake it up, you must first obtain the Poké Flute.
Follow these steps:
- Defeat Team Rocket in the Celadon City Game Corner Hideout.
- Obtain the Silph Scope after defeating Giovanni.
- Travel to Lavender Town.
- Climb Pokémon Tower and rescue Mr. Fuji.
- Visit Mr. Fuji’s house after leaving the tower.
- He will reward you with the Poké Flute.
Once you have the Poké Flute, return to either sleeping Snorlax and interact with it. Your character will automatically use the flute, waking Snorlax and beginning the battle.
Save Before the Battle
Before waking Snorlax, save your game.
This is one of the most important tips in Pokémon FireRed. Since there are only two Snorlax in the game, defeating one by accident permanently removes that opportunity unless you reload your save.
If the battle goes badly or you run out of Poké Balls, simply restart and try again.
Best Strategy to Catch Snorlax
Snorlax has high HP and solid defensive stats, making it surprisingly difficult to capture. A little preparation can dramatically improve your chances.
Use these strategies:
- Lower its HP until the health bar is red.
- Avoid using extremely powerful attacks that could knock it out.
- Inflict a status condition like Sleep or Paralysis.
- Use Great Balls or, even better, Ultra Balls if you already have access to them.
- Be patient, as Snorlax has a relatively low catch rate.
Sleep generally provides the highest capture bonus, although Paralysis also works well if you do not have a reliable sleep move.
Recommended Pokémon for the Battle
Several Pokémon available before encountering Snorlax can make the battle much easier.
Good choices include:
- Butterfree for Sleep Powder.
- Pikachu or Raichu for Thunder Wave.
- Paras or Parasect for Spore if available.
- Any Pokémon that knows False Swipe to safely reduce Snorlax to 1 HP.
False Swipe is especially useful because it guarantees you cannot accidentally knock Snorlax out with the final hit.
Which Snorlax Should You Catch?
Many players wonder whether one Snorlax is better than the other.
The answer is simple. Both Snorlax are identical. They have the same level, stats, and encounter conditions. The only difference is their location.
Some players catch the Route 16 Snorlax first because it blocks access to Cycling Road, while others prefer the Route 12 encounter since it opens another route toward Fuchsia City.
If you want, you can catch both Snorlax during the same playthrough.
Why Snorlax Is Worth Catching
Snorlax is considered one of the strongest Pokémon available during the main story.
Its biggest strengths include:
- Extremely high HP.
- Excellent Special Defense.
- Strong Attack stat.
- Great move variety.
- Reliable performance against many Gym Leaders and Elite Four members.
With moves such as Body Slam, Shadow Ball, Earthquake, Brick Break, and Hyper Beam, Snorlax can handle many difficult battles almost by itself.
Its only major weakness is Fighting-type moves, which are relatively uncommon throughout Pokémon FireRed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many players accidentally lose their chance to catch Snorlax by making simple mistakes.
Avoid these problems:
- Forgetting to save before the encounter.
- Using powerful critical-hit attacks.
- Bringing too few Poké Balls.
- Ignoring status conditions.
- Running away from the battle.
A few extra minutes of preparation can save hours of frustration later.
