Volkswagen is gearing up to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in China with the upcoming ID. Unyx 09, a performance-focused electric sedan that combines striking styling with impressive power. After making a brief appearance at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year, the model has now surfaced in official filings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), offering a much clearer picture of what buyers can expect.
Developed in collaboration with Chinese EV maker Xpeng, the ID. Unyx 09 is expected to go on sale later this year, targeting customers looking for a premium electric sedan with strong performance credentials.
Up to 496 HP From Dual-Motor Setup
Volkswagen will offer the ID. Unyx 09 in two powertrain configurations.
The entry-level model features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 308 hp (230 kW), delivering rear-wheel-drive performance. Buyers seeking additional power can opt for the all-wheel-drive version, which adds a 188 hp front motor, bringing the combined output to an impressive 496 hp (370 kW).
Despite the difference in drivetrain layouts, both variants are electronically limited to a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).
Although Volkswagen has not officially confirmed battery capacities, the specifications closely resemble those of the recently introduced ID. Unyx 08. This suggests the sedan could be offered with 82 kWh and 95 kWh battery packs, both using CATL-supplied lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology.
Sporty Styling Sets It Apart
The ID. Unyx 09 takes a much more aggressive design approach than Volkswagen’s existing electric sedans.
At the front, slim split LED lighting, a sculpted shark-nose profile, and sharp body lines create a distinctly sporty appearance. The clean, aerodynamic silhouette continues along the sides with blacked-out A-pillars, muscular fenders, flush detailing, and a gently sloping roofline that gives the sedan a fastback-inspired profile.
A panoramic glass roof further enhances the premium feel, while buyers will be able to choose between 20-inch and 21-inch alloy wheels.
At the rear, slender LED taillights stretch across the vehicle and are connected by an illuminated red Volkswagen badge. A wide bumper with an integrated diffuser completes the performance-oriented look.
Bigger Than the ID.7
Dimensionally, the ID. Unyx 09 is positioned above Volkswagen’s global ID.7 sedan.
The new EV measures 5,081 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width, and up to 1,526 mm in height, with a generous 3,030 mm wheelbase. Compared with the ID.7, it is 119 mm longer and offers an additional 64 mm of wheelbase, providing more cabin space and a stronger road presence.
Depending on the chosen powertrain, curb weight ranges from 2,207 kg to 2,307 kg.
A Key EV for Volkswagen in China
The ID. Unyx 09 highlights Volkswagen’s growing focus on China, where competition in the electric vehicle segment continues to intensify. By partnering with Xpeng and leveraging locally developed technology, Volkswagen is accelerating the launch of advanced EVs tailored specifically for Chinese consumers.
With nearly 500 horsepower, premium proportions, modern battery technology, and bold styling, the ID. Unyx 09 appears well positioned to challenge rivals in China’s rapidly evolving electric sedan market when deliveries begin later this year.
