Nissan is giving its all-new Leaf a performance-inspired makeover with the launch of the 2026 Nissan Leaf NISMO in Japan. While it doesn’t deliver more horsepower than the standard model, the latest NISMO variant focuses on making the electric crossover feel more engaging behind the wheel through chassis upgrades, revised driving dynamics, and exclusive styling.
For decades, the NISMO badge has been associated with Nissan’s motorsport heritage and iconic performance models. This latest Leaf may not be aimed at the racetrack, but it brings enough enhancements to appeal to drivers who want a more spirited everyday EV.
Same Power, Sharper Performance
Unlike traditional performance models that rely on extra power, the Leaf NISMO takes a different approach. Buyers in Japan can choose between two front-wheel-drive powertrains.
The entry-level B5 model produces 174 horsepower, while the higher-spec B7 version delivers 214 horsepower, matching the most powerful Leaf sold in international markets.
Although output remains unchanged, Nissan says it has recalibrated the electric motor to provide quicker response and smoother power delivery. The company claims these adjustments make the vehicle feel lighter and more eager during acceleration, even though its actual weight remains unchanged.
The drive mode settings have also been revised. Sport mode has been replaced by an exclusive NISMO mode, designed to deliver more direct throttle response and a linear acceleration feel. Standard and Eco modes have also received subtle refinements to improve responsiveness in everyday driving.
Suspension Receives the Biggest Upgrade
The most noticeable changes come underneath the body.
The Leaf NISMO features specially tuned dampers, stiffer suspension components, and a revised electric steering system. Together, these upgrades are intended to improve stability, steering precision, and driver confidence on winding roads.
The performance package is completed with lightweight 19-inch Enkei alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires, offering significantly more grip than the standard setup.
While the Leaf NISMO is unlikely to become a regular sight at track days, these mechanical changes should make it far more enjoyable during spirited weekend drives or daily commuting.
Sportier Styling Without Going Overboard
Visually, the Leaf NISMO adopts a more aggressive appearance while maintaining the clean design of the standard model.
A redesigned front bumper improves airflow around the vehicle, while the rear features a boat-inspired diffuser and a larger ducktail spoiler integrated into the hatch. These aerodynamic additions not only enhance the sporty look but are also intended to improve airflow efficiency.
NISMO-exclusive styling details include signature red accents running along the lower body, special graphics on the hood and mirror caps, and unique badging throughout the exterior.
Customers can choose from four regular Leaf colors, along with two exclusive shades of NISMO Stealth Gray reserved specifically for the performance model.
Cabin Gets Exclusive NISMO Touches
Inside, Nissan has added several sporty details without sacrificing everyday comfort.
A thin red accent stretches across the dashboard, while NISMO branding appears on the instrument cluster and power button. The steering wheel receives a faux leather finish with red stitching and a red center marker inspired by performance cars.
Standard seats feature embroidered NISMO logos and red perforated upholstery. Buyers looking for a more premium experience can opt for Recaro sport seats finished with distinctive red trim.
The interior upgrades create a sportier atmosphere while retaining the practicality expected from the Leaf.
Pricing Limited to Japan for Now
The 2026 Nissan Leaf NISMO is currently available only in Japan.
Pricing starts at approximately $40,458 for the 174-horsepower B5 version. The more powerful B7 model begins at around $42,608, while choosing the optional Recaro seats increases the price to roughly $44,294.
Nissan has not announced plans to introduce the Leaf NISMO in North America or other global markets. Although enthusiasts would likely welcome a sportier version of the electric hatchback overseas, the company has remained silent on any export strategy.
For now, the Leaf NISMO remains a Japan-exclusive offering that demonstrates Nissan’s continued effort to inject more driving excitement into its growing electric vehicle lineup. Even without additional power, the combination of improved handling, sharper styling, and performance-focused tuning gives the Leaf a fresh personality that stands apart from the standard model.
