The U.S. Army has reportedly found an unusual way to encourage soldiers to extend their military service: offering them four days off to play Grand Theft Auto VI.

A memorandum circulating online claims that the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart in Georgia has introduced a special re-enlistment incentive tied to the highly anticipated release of Rockstar Games’ GTA 6. According to the reported document, eligible soldiers who agree to re-enlist during a specified period could receive a four-day pass around the game’s launch.

The reported offer has quickly gone viral, largely because of the unusual nature of the incentive. While military organizations regularly provide bonuses, leave opportunities and other benefits to encourage service members to re-enlist, connecting a retention incentive to one of the biggest video game releases of the decade has caught the attention of gamers and military communities alike.

According to the memorandum, the program is described as a “Special Reenlistment Incentive – GTA 6.” The initiative is reportedly aimed at soldiers assigned or attached to the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion. Soldiers who re-enlist between August 1 and November 14, 2026, would reportedly qualify for the special four-day pass.

The leave is expected to coincide with the game’s launch period. Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, meaning the reported four-day pass would give participating soldiers an opportunity to experience the game shortly after its release.

The document reportedly lists November 20 through November 23 as the proposed period for the special pass. However, the exact timing would remain subject to approval through the soldiers’ chain of command and military requirements.

The reported memo says the purpose of the incentive is to improve retention, boost morale and reward soldiers who commit to continuing their service. In other words, the Army unit would not technically be paying soldiers to play GTA 6. Instead, it would be using a four-day period of leave as an additional incentive for soldiers who decide to sign another re-enlistment contract.

That distinction is important because re-enlistment incentives are a normal part of military personnel management. The U.S. Army offers a variety of options to soldiers who choose to continue their careers, including opportunities involving assignments, training and other benefits. What makes this particular case unusual is the timing of the proposed leave and its direct connection to a video game.

The reported offer has generated plenty of jokes online. GTA fans have already imagined what it would be like to combine military service with the opportunity to spend an entire long weekend exploring the fictional state of Leonida, the setting of the upcoming game.

For many players, four days may barely be enough to scratch the surface of GTA 6. Rockstar Games’ next entry in the franchise is expected to feature a huge open world, a new pair of protagonists and the return of the series’ trademark combination of crime, satire, exploration and chaos.

The game’s popularity also helps explain why the reported Army memo has attracted so much attention. GTA 6 has been in development for years and has become one of the most anticipated entertainment releases in recent history. Its first trailer generated enormous interest, while subsequent updates have continued to fuel speculation and discussion among fans.

The alleged Army incentive is not the first time organizations have acknowledged the enormous interest surrounding the game. Businesses and online communities have already begun discussing the potential impact of its release on employee schedules, gaming habits and consumer activity.

However, there is an important caveat surrounding the Army story: the reported memorandum has not been independently authenticated by the U.S. Army.

The document was initially circulated online through social media and was subsequently shared widely across gaming forums and news platforms. While some details appearing on the document reportedly correspond with information about the battalion and its leadership, that alone does not establish that the memo is an official Army directive.

As a result, the reported four-day GTA 6 pass should currently be viewed as an unverified claim rather than an Army-wide policy or confirmed benefit.

If the memorandum is genuine, the incentive would apply only to eligible soldiers within the specific battalion and would not mean that every U.S. Army soldier could receive time off simply by re-enlisting. Military operations, staffing requirements and individual eligibility would still determine whether a soldier could actually take the leave.

There are also reportedly restrictions attached to the incentive. Soldiers facing certain disciplinary or readiness-related issues may not be eligible to use the special pass until they meet the required conditions. The reported rules also indicate that the four-day period cannot simply be combined with another pass to create a longer absence.

US Army Battalion Reportedly Giving Soldiers Time Off to Play GTA 6 in Exchange for Reenlisting

Despite the uncertainty, the story has already become one of the strangest pieces of GTA 6 launch news. The idea of soldiers being encouraged to re-enlist with the promise of a long weekend dedicated to playing a video game has naturally produced a mixture of amusement, disbelief and genuine interest online.

For now, the reported offer remains unconfirmed. But if the memo is authentic, it could become an unexpectedly memorable example of how much anticipation surrounds Grand Theft Auto VI — and perhaps one of the most unusual re-enlistment incentives ever offered by a U.S. Army unit.
