The Wolf Fur Cape is one of the most useful early Mountain items in Valheim. It gives your Viking protection against frost, allowing you to explore the Mountain biome without constantly relying on Frost Resistance Mead. The cape also has 1 armor at its basic quality, weighs 4, and has 1000 durability. More importantly, its frost resistance makes it a practical upgrade when you first begin collecting silver.
Materials You Need
To craft one Wolf Fur Cape, gather:
- 6 Wolf Pelts
- 4 Silver
- 1 Wolf Trophy
You also need access to a level 2 Workbench. Unlike the Wolf Hide Chestpiece and Wolf Hide Trousers, the cape is made at the Workbench rather than the Forge.
How to Find Wolf Pelts
Wolves are the main source of Wolf Pelts, and they live in the Mountain biome. They are fast, aggressive creatures that often attack in packs, so preparing before hunting them is important.
If you are entering the Mountains for the first time, take Frost Resistance Mead with you. Without frost protection, the cold can quickly become dangerous. Once you have the Wolf Fur Cape equipped, you can use it for permanent frost protection while exploring.
Look for wolves on Mountain slopes and plateaus. A bow is especially useful because you can damage wolves from a distance before they reach you. Blocking and dodging can also work well if you prefer close combat. Keep fighting them until you collect the six Wolf Pelts required for the cape.
How to Get Silver
Silver is found in the Mountain biome, usually underground. You need a Wishbone to locate hidden silver deposits. You obtain the Wishbone by defeating Bonemass, the boss of the Swamp biome.
Equip the Wishbone while exploring the Mountains. When you approach a buried silver vein, it will begin producing a signal. Follow the signal and dig into the ground until you uncover the deposit.
Mine the silver with an Iron Pickaxe or a stronger pickaxe, then transport the ore back to your base and smelt it into Silver. You only need four Silver for the basic Wolf Fur Cape, making it one of the cheaper ways to gain reliable frost protection.
How to Get a Wolf Trophy
The final ingredient is a Wolf Trophy. This item drops from wolves, but it is not guaranteed to drop from every kill. Keep hunting wolves if you have collected enough pelts but still do not have the trophy.
Because you need six pelts as well, hunting wolves for both materials at the same time is the most efficient approach. Store extra pelts because they are also useful for other Wolf equipment.
How to Craft the Wolf Fur Cape
Once you have all three ingredients, return to a level 2 Workbench. Open the crafting menu and select the Wolf Fur Cape. If the recipe is available and the materials are in your inventory, craft it directly.
The basic recipe is:
- 6 Wolf Pelts
- 4 Silver
- 1 Wolf Trophy
- Level 2 Workbench
Equip the finished cape from your inventory. Its frost resistance will protect you from the freezing conditions of the Mountains.
Should You Craft It Early?
Yes, especially if you are preparing for extended Mountain exploration. The Wolf Fur Cape costs far less Silver than the Wolf Hide Chestpiece while providing the same frost resistance. This lets you keep your existing chest armor while spending your limited Silver on weapons, tools, or other upgrades.
Remember that frost resistance does not stack. Wearing the cape alongside another frost-resistant item does not provide double protection. Still, the cape is an excellent choice for players entering the Mountains for the first time.
