Getting a wanted level is easy in Grand Theft Auto V, but escaping the police without cheats takes a little practice. Whether you have one star or the full five, the basic goal is the same: break the police’s line of sight, avoid being spotted again, and wait for the wanted level to disappear. You can also use the city’s tunnels, alleys, and vehicle-changing tricks to make the process much easier.

Break The Police’s Line Of Sight
When officers can see you, the wanted stars remain active and the chase continues. Once you escape their vision, the stars begin flashing and the police start searching around your last known position.
Watch the mini-map carefully. Police vehicles appear as red and blue markers, while their visible search areas can show where they are looking. Do not drive directly toward these areas. Instead, turn several corners, use buildings as cover, and put some distance between yourself and the officers. After staying hidden for a short period, the wanted level will disappear.
Use Tunnels And Underground Routes
Tunnels are among the safest places to hide when you have a high wanted level. Los Santos has several underground routes where police vehicles have difficulty following you. Once you reach a tunnel, stop somewhere away from the entrance and wait.
The underground tunnel near the Del Perro Freeway is particularly useful. It provides a reliable hiding place because you can drive below the streets and break the police’s line of sight. This method can work even when you have several wanted stars, making it much safer than trying to outrun police cars through busy streets.
Switch Vehicles When You Are Hidden
Changing vehicles can confuse the police, but timing is important. First, make sure officers cannot see you. Then leave your current vehicle and take another one.
When you successfully change vehicles while hidden, the police are less likely to identify the new car. They continue searching based on the vehicle and location they last knew. However, driving the replacement vehicle directly in front of police can restart the pursuit, so stay away from their search areas until the stars disappear.
Try Los Santos Customs
If you can reach Los Santos Customs without being seen, entering the workshop and changing your vehicle’s appearance can remove your wanted level in Story Mode. A respray is the important part, but you cannot simply drive into the shop while police are actively watching you.
This method is useful when you are already close to a Los Santos Customs location. If police are following you closely, escape their vision first and approach the shop from a safer direction.
Use Alleys, Parking Areas, And Cover
You do not always need a tunnel. Narrow alleys, parking garages, side streets, bridges, bushes, and areas with different elevations can block police vision. The key is to avoid obvious roads where patrol cars can easily follow you.
At lower wanted levels, hiding behind cover and staying completely out of sight can be enough. At higher levels, moving away from the search area before hiding is usually safer because more police units and helicopters can be involved.
Avoid Making The Situation Worse
Once you have escaped direct pursuit, do not start shooting, crashing into police cars, or driving back toward the search zone. Every new encounter can bring the police straight back to your position.
If you are driving fast, take unpredictable turns instead of staying on major highways. Use traffic, buildings, tunnels, and elevation changes to break visibility. Once the stars begin flashing, patience is often more effective than speed.
Remember that the wanted system rewards patience. The moment you regain a view of the road, it can be tempting to accelerate away. Resist that urge. Stay hidden until the stars vanish, then return to driving and continue your activity.
