SoftBank Weighs $18 Billion Acquisition of Allied Universal

SoftBank Group is considering an $18 billion acquisition of Allied Universal, one of the world’s largest security services companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The potential transaction could expand SoftBank’s investment portfolio beyond its traditional focus on technology and artificial intelligence.

The discussions are reportedly at an early stage, and a deal is not guaranteed. Details regarding the proposed transaction’s structure, financing and timeline remain unclear.

Allied Universal provides security services, including manned guarding, risk management, surveillance and integrated security technology. The company serves clients across several industries, including healthcare, retail, commercial real estate, education and critical infrastructure. Its extensive operations make it a major player in the global private security market.

For SoftBank, the proposed acquisition could offer exposure to a business supported by recurring contracts and demand for essential services. Unlike investments in emerging technology companies, security services can generate revenue through long-term agreements with corporate and institutional customers.

The acquisition could also create opportunities to introduce advanced technologies into Allied Universal’s operations. Artificial intelligence, automated monitoring systems and data analytics are increasingly being explored to improve security management, identify potential threats and enhance operational efficiency.

However, an acquisition valued at $18 billion would involve significant financial considerations. Allied Universal’s debt levels, labour expenses and contractual obligations would likely be important factors in determining the attractiveness of the transaction. Security services remain labour-intensive, making employee costs and workforce management critical to profitability.

Financing would also be a major consideration for SoftBank. Depending on the final structure, the transaction could involve cash, borrowing or other funding arrangements. Such a large investment could affect the group’s financial flexibility and its ability to pursue other opportunities.

The reported discussions reflect broader investor interest in established businesses that offer stable revenues alongside opportunities for technological transformation. Traditional service industries are increasingly adopting digital tools to strengthen efficiency and competitiveness.

If completed, the acquisition would represent a significant expansion of SoftBank’s holdings and could reshape the ownership landscape of the global security services industry. For now, the proposal remains under consideration, with no confirmed agreement announced.

NY Fed Service Sector Survey Finds Notable Price Pressures

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s October survey of service-sector businesses has revealed persistent price pressures and a worsening outlook for economic activity, raising concerns about inflation in the United States.

The bank’s Business Leaders Survey, released on October 16, found that the pace of increases in input prices remained sharp, while selling prices accelerated to their fastest rate since 2022. Businesses also reported worsening supply availability, highlighting continued challenges in managing operating costs.

The survey’s headline business activity index fell 12 points to -20.7 in October, marking its weakest reading since March. The decline indicates that service-sector activity deteriorated more sharply across New York, northern New Jersey and southwestern Connecticut.

The business climate index remained deeply negative at -35.0, suggesting that many companies continued to view current conditions as significantly worse than normal. Businesses also became more pessimistic about the coming six months, while capital spending plans remained weak.

Price indicators underscored the persistence of inflationary pressures. The prices paid index stood near 70.0, reflecting widespread increases in the costs of goods and services purchased by businesses. Meanwhile, the prices received index rose to 36.3, its highest level in four years, indicating that more firms were increasing prices charged to customers.

The findings come amid continued concerns over the effects of trade tariffs and rising energy costs. Higher input expenses can force companies to increase customer prices, potentially prolonging inflation even as business activity weakens.

The survey’s results also present a challenge for the Federal Reserve, which must balance persistent inflation against signs of slowing economic momentum. Sustained price increases could complicate decisions on interest rates, particularly if inflation in the services sector shows little improvement.

Employment conditions in the surveyed region remained broadly steady, although wage growth was modest. Businesses also expected supply availability to deteriorate further.

The latest findings highlight an uneven economic environment, with service-sector firms facing rising costs and weakening activity despite strength in other parts of the economy.

US Import Prices Increase, Posting Largest Annual Gain in More Than Four Years

US import prices increased in September, recording their largest annual gain in more than four years and raising concerns about persistent inflationary pressures across the American economy.

The rise in import prices reflects increasing costs for goods purchased from overseas, potentially putting additional pressure on businesses that depend on foreign supplies, raw materials and finished products. Higher import costs can affect company profit margins and contribute to rising prices for consumers if businesses pass on the additional expenses.

Import prices are an important economic indicator because they provide insight into the cost pressures facing American businesses. An increase can influence production expenses, retail prices and overall inflation, although the impact depends on domestic demand, currency movements and companies’ pricing decisions.

The latest increase comes amid uncertainty surrounding international trade, tariffs and global supply chains. Changes in trade policies can raise the cost of imported products, while fluctuations in energy prices, shipping expenses and exchange rates can further influence the prices paid by American importers.

Manufacturers and retailers could face particular challenges if elevated import costs persist. Companies may absorb some of the increase to remain competitive, adjust their sourcing strategies or raise prices for customers. The eventual impact on consumers will depend on how businesses respond and whether demand remains strong enough to support higher prices.

The data could also complicate the Federal Reserve’s efforts to bring inflation towards its 2% target. Persistent increases in import costs may reinforce concerns that inflation could remain elevated, potentially limiting the central bank’s flexibility to lower interest rates.

However, higher import prices do not automatically translate into equivalent increases in consumer prices. Businesses can negotiate with suppliers, switch to alternative sources or improve efficiency to reduce the effect of rising costs.

The latest figures highlight the potential influence of international trade on the US inflation outlook. Continued increases could place additional pressure on businesses and households, while also creating challenges for policymakers seeking to balance price stability with economic growth.

Economic observers will monitor upcoming inflation and trade data to determine whether import price increases continue or begin to moderate in the coming months.

Anthropic Offers Blackstone Double-Digit Yield in Chip-Financing Deal

Anthropic has reportedly offered Blackstone a double-digit yield in a chip-financing arrangement, highlighting the growing role of private capital in funding the infrastructure required to develop and operate advanced artificial intelligence systems.

The reported deal comes as AI companies face mounting expenses associated with securing advanced processors, expanding computing capacity and meeting rising demand for AI-powered services. The proposed arrangement could provide Anthropic with access to essential computing resources while offering investors an opportunity to earn returns from the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude family of AI models, has been investing heavily in computing capabilities to support model training, product development and growing enterprise adoption. Advanced AI systems require substantial resources, including specialised chips, data centres, electricity and networking infrastructure.

Blackstone, a major alternative investment manager, has extensive experience investing in infrastructure and technology-related assets. A chip-financing agreement could allow the firm to participate in AI’s expansion without directly developing artificial intelligence models.

A double-digit yield would represent an attractive potential return for investors, although the financial risks would depend on the deal’s structure, repayment terms and underlying assets. Semiconductor equipment also faces depreciation risks as newer, more powerful processors enter the market, potentially reducing the value of existing hardware.

The arrangement reflects a broader shift in how AI infrastructure is financed. Rather than funding all computing investments through conventional corporate spending, technology companies are increasingly exploring partnerships with financial institutions and infrastructure investors to distribute costs and preserve capital.

However, the sustainability of such arrangements will depend on whether revenue from AI products and services can justify the substantial investment required. Slower demand growth, rising operating expenses or technological changes could affect returns for both borrowers and investors.

For Anthropic, alternative financing could help maintain access to computing resources while preserving funds for research and commercial expansion. For Blackstone, the deal could offer exposure to a sector attracting significant investment.

The reported arrangement underscores the growing connection between artificial intelligence and private credit, as financing becomes an increasingly important factor in the industry’s competition for computing capacity.
