Eternal, formerly known as Zomato, has announced the appointment of Aditya Mangla as the new Chief Executive Officer of its food ordering and delivery business. The board approved Mangla’s elevation to the top role for a two-year term, effective July 6, 2025. He succeeds Rakesh Ranjan, who completed his two-year stint and will continue to be associated with the company in an advisory capacity. Mangla’s appointment is part of a broader internal leadership reshuffle at Eternal, reflecting the company’s strategy of rotational leadership and fresh perspectives amid a challenging business environment.
Deepinder Goyal, founder of Eternal, emphasized the need for leaders who can navigate complexity with decisiveness and humility. In a communication to employees, Goyal highlighted Mangla’s ability to challenge the status quo, his willingness to disagree respectfully, and his instinct to act thoughtfully in uncertain situations. The leadership transition comes at a time when Eternal is seeking to revitalize its core food delivery segment, which has faced headwinds from slowing urban demand and heightened competition.
From Product Head to CEO:
Aditya Mangla’s rise within Eternal has been marked by a series of impactful leadership roles. Since joining the company in March 2021, Mangla has served as Head of Product for the food ordering and delivery division, as well as leading supply and customer experience functions. His work has focused on optimizing the restaurant partner ecosystem and enhancing customer satisfaction across digital platforms. Mangla’s efforts have been instrumental in streamlining operations and improving the overall customer journey, earning him recognition within the organization.
Prior to joining Eternal, Mangla held senior positions in product, marketing, and P&L management across several tech-driven startups and established companies. His academic credentials include a master’s degree in Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University, a management degree from the Indian School of Business—where he was a Torchbearer Awardee—and an undergraduate engineering degree in IT from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology. His diverse background has equipped him with a blend of technical expertise and business acumen, positioning him as a strong fit for the CEO role.
Zomato’s Food Delivery Segment:
Mangla steps into the CEO position at a pivotal time for Zomato’s food delivery business. In the January-March 2025 quarter, the segment reported an 18% year-on-year growth in topline to Rs 2,054 crore, but faced a marginal decline on a sequential basis. The slowdown has been attributed to weaker urban consumption, lower discretionary spending, and a shortage of delivery partners—challenges that have been exacerbated by the rapid growth of quick commerce platforms offering ultra-fast delivery of packaged foods.
Despite these headwinds, Zomato remains the largest segment within Eternal, contributing 35% to the company’s overall operating income. Eternal’s overall revenue surged 64% year-on-year in Q4 FY25, reaching Rs 5,833 crore, while net profit stood at Rs 39 crore. However, the growth rate of the food delivery segment has consistently slowed, from 28% in Q4 FY24 to 16% in Q4 FY25, underlining the need for renewed strategic focus.
Mangla’s mandate will include driving operational efficiency, strengthening the restaurant partner network, and enhancing customer experience to maintain Zomato’s leadership position. With competition intensifying from both established players and new entrants in the quick commerce space, Mangla will be tasked with steering the business through a period of transformation and innovation.
Strategic Priorities and Industry Outlook:
As CEO, Aditya Mangla is expected to focus on several key priorities. These include leveraging technology to improve delivery logistics, expanding partnerships with restaurant operators, and exploring new growth avenues within the food ordering ecosystem. The company also aims to address the evolving needs of urban consumers, who are increasingly seeking convenience, speed, and a wider variety of food options.
Industry observers note that Mangla’s appointment signals Eternal’s commitment to nurturing homegrown leadership talent and adapting to changing market dynamics. The rotational leadership model, which has seen several internal promotions and lateral moves in recent years, is designed to inject fresh ideas and foster a culture of accountability.
With a market capitalization of over Rs 2.5 lakh crore and a growing presence in India’s digital economy, Eternal’s performance in the food delivery sector will remain closely watched. As Mangla takes charge, stakeholders are looking for decisive action to reinvigorate growth and sustain Zomato’s competitive edge in a rapidly evolving landscape.
