Your iPhone is packed with powerful features, some of which you might not even know about. But the more you learn about your phone, the more you can get out of it. Take some time to explore some of the different features, tools, and capabilities that your phone has – you might just discover some new options and opportunities that you didn’t previously know existed.
Customizing Control Center
The Control Center is one of the most convenient features on your iPhone, offering quick access to frequently used controls. You can customize it to suit your needs:
- Add or remove controls: Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. Here, you can add shortcuts for things like the flashlight, camera, calculator, and more.
- Rearrange icons: Once you’ve added your desired controls, you can rearrange them by dragging and dropping them in the order you prefer. This makes it easier to access the tools you use the most.
Using Siri Shortcuts
Most people use Siri for relatively trivial tasks – like Googling a question. But did you know that Siri Shortcuts can help you automate routine activities that save time and effort?
To create a Siri shortcut, open the Shortcuts app and tap the plus icon to create a new shortcut. (You can set these up for tasks like sending a message, playing your favorite playlist, or even getting directions to home.) Once your shortcut is set up, you can assign a custom voice command to it. Just tap “Add to Siri” and record your command. This way, you can trigger the shortcut simply by talking to Siri.
Optimizing Battery Life
Battery life is crucial for staying connected throughout the day. While battery life in the iPhone has improved pretty significantly over the past five years, here are some tips to make it last even longer:
- Enable Low Power Mode: This feature reduces background activity and helps extend battery life. You can turn it on in Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
- Manage app usage: Some apps consume more battery than others. Go to Settings > Battery to see which apps are using the most power and consider limiting their usage or adjusting their settings.
- Adjust screen brightness: Lowering your screen brightness can significantly save battery. You can adjust it in the Control Center or enable Auto-Brightness in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
In addition to phone settings, some advanced iPhone cases even have built-in battery packs and boosters that are designed to give you some extra charge and/or extend the life of your battery even more. Definitely consider this if you’re someone who uses your phone throughout the day and regularly finds yourself running on empty.
Managing Storage
Running out of storage can slow down your iPhone and limit its functionality. With this in mind, you need to proactively manage your storage in an effective manner.
To do this, start by going into Settings > General > iPhone Storage and enable “Offload Unused Apps.” This will automatically remove apps you don’t use often while keeping their data intact.
Then, in the iPhone Storage settings, you can see a list of apps and how much space they are using. Review large files and delete any that you no longer need. For the files that you do want to keep, store as many of them as you can in iCloud to free up space on your device. (You can manage your iCloud storage in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud.)
Enhancing Your Camera and Photos
Your iPhone camera is capable of taking professional-level photographs. Technically, it’s pretty good straight out of the box. But if you want to enhance your photos even more, there are some additional steps you can take.
- Use the grid: Turn on the grid in Settings > Camera to help compose your shots using the rule of thirds, making your photos more balanced and visually appealing.
- Adjust exposure: When taking a photo, tap the screen to focus, then slide your finger up or down to adjust the exposure. This helps you capture the perfect amount of light in your shots.
- Explore camera modes: Experiment with different camera modes like Portrait, Panorama, and Night mode to capture a variety of scenes. Each mode is designed to optimize your photos in different conditions.
- Edit photos: Use the built-in editing tools in the Photos app to enhance your images. You can adjust lighting, colors, and even crop your photos to make them look their best. Tap Edit when viewing a photo and try out the different tools available.
