Sony and Honda’s electric vehicle venture, Afeela, is taking a significant step toward becoming a reality. After five years of anticipation, the Afeela 1 is now available for preorder in California, marking the tech giant Sony’s bold entry into the luxury EV market. The sleek, AI-powered electric sedan has a lot to offer, including cutting-edge technology and competitive features, making it a strong contender against Tesla and Lucid Motors.
Two Trims, Two Price Points: Afeela 1 Origin and Signature
The Afeela 1 will be available in two trims: the Afeela 1 Origin, priced at $89,900, and the more premium Afeela 1 Signature, which starts at $102,900. Both price tags include a complimentary three-year subscription to in-car features such as Sony Honda Mobility’s Level 2+ driver assist system and an AI-powered personal assistant.
Preorders opened today, requiring a refundable $200 deposit. However, there’s a catch: for now, preorders are limited to California residents. The company has not clarified if or when the vehicle will expand to other states. Deliveries are expected to roll out in stages, with the Signature trim arriving in 2026 and the Origin in 2027.
High-Tech Features: Redefining the Driving Experience
The Afeela 1 is packed with advanced features aimed at providing a tech-forward driving experience. It boasts a striking minimalist design with short overhangs, a long wheelbase, and a single paint option: Core Black. Inside, the vehicle offers a futuristic cabin equipped with dashboard-spanning screens, augmented reality integration, and the promise of “virtual worlds” to enhance the ride.
Sony Honda Mobility CEO Yasuhide Mizuno highlighted the vehicle’s 40 sensors and cameras for semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Additionally, the Afeela 1 is built with Tesla’s NACS (North American Charging Standard) charging port, giving it native support for Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network. With an EPA-estimated range of up to 300 miles, the Afeela 1 seeks to balance luxury, technology, and practicality.
During a live demonstration, Mizuno showcased the prototype’s voice-command capability, summoning the car onto the stage by saying, “Come on out, Afeela.” Although labeled as a tech demo, this feature hints at Sony’s ambition to bring interactive and convenient solutions to car ownership.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
Sony and Honda’s partnership arrives at a crucial time for the EV market. The U.S. has experienced fluctuating demand for EVs, and global competition from Chinese manufacturers continues to intensify. To strengthen its position, Honda has announced a merger with Nissan to improve its EV production capabilities.
Afeela’s preorder launch aligns with the Biden administration’s recent push for EV incentives, though changes in federal policies could impact the market by the time the vehicle starts deliveries.
Sony Honda Mobility plans to detail the shopping and ownership experience for Afeela customers in a follow-up press conference, indicating their commitment to customer-centric innovation.
As the Afeela 1 edges closer to production, it represents more than just a new EV. It signifies Sony’s ambition to fuse its expertise in entertainment and AI with Honda’s automotive legacy, creating a luxury EV experience unlike any other. For now, California residents have the exclusive chance to be part of this next chapter in electric mobility.
