The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is no longer affecting just software development or cutting-edge research labs. It is now reshaping the global hardware supply chain in profound and sometimes disruptive ways. As AI companies accelerate their efforts to build larger and more powerful data centers, the strain is spreading well beyond high-profile components such as graphics processors and AI accelerators. Storage devices, memory modules, and other foundational hardware are increasingly under pressure, with delivery timelines stretching dramatically and prices climbing across multiple categories.

Enterprise Storage Faces Unprecedented Delays

According to a recent report by Taiwan-based technology publication DigiTimes, enterprise-grade hard disk drives (HDDs) — long considered the dependable backbone of large-scale data storage — are now in critically short supply. Delivery lead times for some enterprise HDD models have reportedly expanded to more than two years, a remarkable shift in an industry that typically operates with far more predictable production cycles.

The shortage is largely driven by the aggressive expansion of hyperscale data centers in countries such as the United States, Canada, and China. Companies racing to develop and deploy increasingly sophisticated AI systems require enormous volumes of storage to handle vast training datasets, model checkpoints, logs, and operational workloads. While graphics processing units (GPUs) and accelerators capture much of the public attention, these systems are only one part of a complex infrastructure stack that depends heavily on reliable, high-capacity storage.

For AI operators building out massive computing clusters, waiting years for HDD supply to normalize is not a practical option. As a result, many firms are pivoting toward solid-state drives (SSDs), despite their historically higher cost per gigabyte compared to traditional hard drives.

Cost Pressures Drive Shift to QLC NAND

The transition from HDDs to SSDs, however, is not happening uniformly across the market. To control expenses while continuing to scale rapidly, many AI-focused companies are choosing quad-level cell (QLC) NAND-based SSDs instead of triple-level cell (TLC) alternatives.

QLC technology stores four bits of data per memory cell, enabling greater storage density and lower manufacturing costs. In contrast, TLC stores three bits per cell and typically delivers better endurance and performance. For years, TLC has been the preferred choice in enterprise environments because it offers stronger durability, particularly for workloads involving heavy write cycles.

Yet as storage demand surges and infrastructure budgets swell, affordability has become a top priority. QLC’s lower cost makes it attractive for AI data centers that require vast amounts of capacity, even if it means accepting trade-offs in endurance and sustained performance. Industry observers suggest that the growing appetite for QLC-based SSDs in North America and China could soon have far-reaching consequences across the global storage market.

Most consumer-grade SSDs already rely heavily on QLC NAND to keep prices competitive. If hyperscale data center operators continue absorbing significant portions of QLC production, supply for consumer devices could tighten considerably.

Potential Ripple Effects for Consumers

The possibility of a consumer storage shortage is becoming a real concern. A substantial share of global NAND manufacturing capacity is being directed toward enterprise and AI-driven demand. Some manufacturers are reportedly operating at full capacity through 2026 due to large-scale procurement and stockpiling by AI firms preparing for continued shortages.

Analysts believe this shift could fundamentally alter the SSD market’s balance. If AI companies maintain their current pace of adoption, QLC NAND could overtake TLC in total sales by early 2027. Such a development would represent a significant milestone, given TLC’s long-standing dominance in performance-sensitive applications.

For everyday consumers, the impact could be painful. Hardware prices are already elevated due to ongoing supply constraints and increased demand for AI-ready systems. A shortage of consumer SSDs would likely push prices even higher, adding further pressure on PC buyers, gamers, and small businesses looking to upgrade storage.

AI’s Expanding Demand for Core Components

The storage crunch is only one piece of a broader pattern emerging across the semiconductor ecosystem. The explosive growth of AI infrastructure has intensified demand for nearly every major hardware component inside modern data centers.

In addition to storage, AI clusters require large numbers of CPUs to coordinate workloads, advanced networking equipment to manage data traffic between nodes, and extensive amounts of DRAM to support model training and inference operations. Each layer of this infrastructure is experiencing elevated demand, contributing to widespread supply challenges.

Recent reports indicate that DRAM prices have surged by nearly 50 percent in a short span, reflecting both limited supply and aggressive purchasing by AI-focused operators. Even companies willing to pay premium prices are encountering allocation constraints.

Memory Allocations Tighten Despite Higher Prices

AI data center operators in the United States and China are reportedly receiving only about 70 percent of their requested DRAM allocations. This shortfall persists even after they have agreed to pay significantly inflated rates, underscoring the depth of the imbalance between supply and demand.

Expanding semiconductor manufacturing capacity is not a quick solution. Building and equipping new fabrication plants requires billions of dollars and several years of construction and ramp-up time. As a result, chipmakers are struggling to scale production fast enough to meet the sudden surge in AI-driven demand.

At the same time, memory manufacturers are prioritizing higher-margin AI components over mainstream consumer products. Major industry players such as Samsung and SK Hynix are reportedly shifting production capacity away from consumer-focused modules to concentrate on more profitable AI-related offerings.

DDR5 Modules Also in Short Supply

The tightening supply is not limited to specialized memory like high-bandwidth memory (HBM), commonly used in AI accelerators. Standard DDR5 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs), widely deployed in enterprise servers, are also facing shortages.

Demand for DDR5 RDIMMs has reportedly exceeded supply, as manufacturers redirect fabrication resources toward AI-centric products. This shift is further squeezing availability for traditional enterprise customers and smaller data center operators that do not have the purchasing power of hyperscale AI firms.

The broader PC ecosystem is already feeling the effects. As manufacturers prioritize large AI contracts, smaller buyers may encounter extended lead times and higher procurement costs across a range of components.
