AI Exodus Hits Intel, Sachin Katti to OpenAI Following Saurabh Kulkarni's AMD Move

The turnaround story of Intel, under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan, hit a snag this week as the chipmaker lost another senior AI executive, casting fresh doubt about how the company will compete in the artificial intelligence race reshaping the semiconductor industry. Sachin Katti, Intel’s Chief Technology & AI Officer, announced Tuesday evening he’s joining Sam Altman’s OpenAI, marking the second high-profile AI-focused departure in recent weeks for Intel.

The professor-turned-tech executive shared the news on social networks, saying he is excited to build compute infrastructure for AGI along with Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman.

“Very grateful for the tremendous opportunity and experience at Intel over the last 4 years leading networking, edge computing and AI,” Katti wrote in a tweet that thanked his soon-to-be-former employer while signaling readiness for new challenges at one of the world’s most prominent AI companies.

Key AI Talent Leaves Intel for AMD Despite Stock Rally

The timing cannot be worse for Intel. Katti’s departure comes just weeks after Saurabh Kulkarni, who until recently was Intel’s Corporate Vice President of Datacenter GPU Product Management, parted ways with the chipmaker.

After two years with Intel, where he was previously VP of AI Systems Design, Kulkarni announced on LinkedIn that he is joining rival AMD in a similar datacenter GPU role.

The consecutive exits of these two senior AI talents mark a critical juncture for Intel, which spent years catching up in the AI chip market with more agile competitors like Nvidia and AMD. These exits raise questions about Intel’s ability to execute an ambitious AI strategy just as the company is showing signs of financial recovery.

Intel’s stock has gained about 92% this year, well above the broader market, technology sector, and semiconductor industry. Those strong gains represent investor optimism in Tan’s restructuring work and recent financing deals that were all part of efforts to stabilize the chipmaker’s balance sheet and streamline its operations.

Tan will now oversee Intel’s AI efforts directly, according to Reuters, after Katti steps down. “We thank Sachin for his contributions and wish him all the best. Lip-Bu will lead the AI and Advanced Technologies Groups and will work closely with the team,” says the statement from the company.

The executive exodus presents a red flag for investors and industry watchers who have been following Intel’s efforts to regain its position as a semiconductor powerhouse.

The early part of the restructuring process at the chipmaker relied overwhelmingly on cost-cutting measures, with deep layoffs and scaled-back foundry plans. Still, Tan has made it known repeatedly that AI represents Intel’s way forward.

Intel’s AI Transformation, Partnership with Nvidia Key to Future Growth

During Intel’s third-quarter earnings call in late October, Tan sounded optimistic about the company’s AI prospects. “We are still in the early stage of AI revolution, and I believe Intel can and will play a much more significant role as we transform the company,” he told analysts and investors. The word “AI” came up 48 times during that call, underscoring just how central the technology is to Intel’s future plans.

Tan underscored that Intel and Nvidia’s partnership was one of the main elements of the Intel AI strategy, mentioning that both companies are “joining forces to create a new class of products and experience spanning multiple generations that accelerate the adoption of AI for the hyperscale, enterprise and consumer markets.”

The CEO vowed to make Intel the “compute platform of choice for AI inference” and promised to continue delivering AI capabilities across the company’s product lineup, including Xeon processors, AI PCs, Arc GPUs, and its open software stack.

But in the hyper-competitive AI chip market, words and strategy documents only get you so far. It takes talented engineers and visionary leaders to execute on even the boldest of plans and deliver category-creating products. When those leaders start heading for the exits-particularly to direct competitors or AI-focused companies like OpenAI-it raises uncomfortable questions about whether Intel can actually deliver.

The challenge for Tan now is clear: retain the remaining AI talent, rebuild confidence in Intel’s AI roadmap, and prove that the company can compete effectively in a market where it’s been largely overshadowed by its rivals. With AI driving near-term business growth and serving as the foundation for sustainable long-term expansion, Intel can’t afford many more departures like these.
