AirPods Sales Surpass $18 Billion Outpacing Nintendo’s Annual Revenue

AirPods, once just another accessory, are now set to become one of Apple’s top revenue generators, following the iPhone and Mac. Industry experts predict that AirPods could bring in a staggering $22 billion by fiscal 2024, surpassing previous sales expectations by 14%. This impressive growth highlights how AirPods are becoming an integral part of Apple’s broader product strategy.

Recent data shows that 62% of U.S. Gen Z consumers own AirPods, illustrating the strong demand among younger generations. Experts predict that by 2030, this level of ownership will extend to all age groups, solidifying AirPods as a mainstream product.

Surpassing Competitors in Revenue

AirPods are already surpassing the annual revenue of several major companies, including Spotify, eBay, and Airbnb, as noted by PCMag. While these figures reflect gross revenue rather than profit, they underscore how vital AirPods are to Apple’s financial performance. Despite a slight growth slowdown expected in fiscal 2023, Apple is primed for a strong rebound in 2024, thanks to a surge in demand and a refresh cycle.

The Impact of Replacement Cycles

AirPods saw explosive growth during the pandemic, and with a typical lifespan of three years, many users are expected to replace their devices in 2024. This pattern could drive a 12% annual growth in AirPods sales over the next five years, even with a modest 5% increase in Apple’s overall user base. This suggests that AirPods sales could well surpass $22 billion by 2024, exceeding even the most optimistic forecasts. As Apple refines its offerings, including slight increases in average selling price (ASP), the revenue potential for AirPods is poised to rise significantly.

Pricing Trends and Attach Rate

In 2022, the average price of AirPods stood at $181, a $24 drop from 2021. However, with high-end models like the $249 AirPods Pro gaining popularity, experts believe the ASP will rise again, potentially reaching $200 in the coming years. The second-generation AirPods are priced at $129, while the third-generation version is available for $169. Apple’s strategy to include more premium models and raise the average price will further boost AirPods’ revenue.

The attach rate—the percentage of iPhone users who also own AirPods—is steadily increasing. In the U.S., 47% of iPhone owners have AirPods, which mirrors the global rate of 40%. By 2030, this could rise to 60%, pushing AirPods sales even further and potentially reaching $45 billion.

Catching Up to iPads

AirPods are rapidly gaining ground on the iPad in terms of revenue. While Macs and iPads are critical to Apple’s product lineup, their growth has slowed compared to AirPods. AirPods’ faster adoption rate and shorter refresh cycle, thanks to their seamless integration with iPhones, make them a more dynamic contributor to Apple’s bottom line.

A survey revealed that only 36% of iPhone users own an iPad, while 62% own AirPods, reflecting the accessory’s growing appeal. This suggests AirPods will not only bridge the gap with iPads but may soon become Apple’s third-most important product behind the iPhone and Mac.

The Hidden Revenue Stream from Replacements

AirPods’ compact design, while convenient, makes them prone to being lost or damaged. According to CBS, customers spend over half a billion dollars every year replacing their AirPods, a lucrative revenue stream for Apple. This phenomenon further accelerates the refresh cycle, ensuring steady sales growth for the company.

Evolving Features and Future Models

AirPods have come a long way since their launch, evolving from basic wireless earbuds to sophisticated audio devices with advanced features like noise cancellation and voice isolation. The second-generation AirPods Pro, priced at $249, were recently approved by the FDA as over-the-counter hearing aids, expanding their functionality.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to release the third-generation AirPods Pro in 2025. Rumored upgrades include enhanced noise cancellation and a new design. Future models may even feature additional health-related capabilities, further solidifying AirPods as a versatile and essential product.
