Anker, the well-known brand behind a variety of smartphone accessories, has announced a recall of three wireless Bluetooth speaker models due to dangerous battery issues. The recall includes the black Soundcore Bluetooth Speaker and two versions of the PowerConf S3 Bluetooth Speaker, which were sold exclusively on Amazon throughout 2023. The affected models are identified by the following numbers: A3102016, A3302011, and A3302031.
Dangerous Battery Failures Prompt Urgent Recall
The recall impacts around 69,000 speakers in the U.S. and approximately 9,764 units in Canada. The root cause of the recall is faulty lithium-ion batteries in the speakers that pose a serious fire hazard. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Anker has received 33 reports of these devices overheating, emitting smoke, and even causing small fires. One user also reported sustaining minor burns as a result of the malfunction. These incidents have raised significant safety concerns, prompting Anker to work closely with Amazon to notify all customers who purchased the affected models.
These Bluetooth speakers, priced between $28 and $130, are designed for portability and ease of use, but the battery failure makes them a fire hazard. As a precautionary measure, Anker is offering free replacements for all affected products.
How to Check if Your Speaker Is Affected
To see if your speaker is part of the recall, you’ll need to check the serial number (SN code) located on the underside of the device. Anker has set up a dedicated page on its website where users can enter their SN code to confirm whether their speaker is included in the recall. If your speaker is affected, Anker recommends that you stop using it immediately, power it off, and disconnect it from any chargers or power sources.
Once you’ve verified your speaker’s recall status, you can request a free replacement through Anker’s customer service. The process involves filling out a recall form on their website and following instructions to receive a new speaker.
Safe Disposal Guidelines
For those affected by the recall, it’s critical not to throw the defective devices in the trash or take them to electronic recycling bins in retail stores. Due to the fire risk posed by the faulty lithium-ion batteries, these speakers must be disposed of properly. The CPSC advises taking the recalled devices to a municipal recycling center that handles damaged lithium batteries. You can find a suitable location through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s website.
Anker’s Recalls in 2024 Raise Concerns
This is not the first time this year that Anker has been forced to recall products due to faulty batteries. Earlier in 2024, the company recalled several other devices, including the 321 Power Bank (PowerCore 5K) and additional PowerConf S3 speakers. In September, Anker also recalled several MagGo products, including the 334 MagGo Battery and the PowerCore 10K battery pack, due to similar issues. These repeated battery malfunctions have raised questions about the company’s quality control processes and its ability to ensure the safety of its products.
What Consumers Need to Know
Anker encourages customers who are uncertain whether their speaker is part of the recall to reach out for more information. If you own one of the affected models, Anker’s customer support team will guide you through the recall process and ensure you receive a replacement at no cost.
As the use of lithium-ion batteries becomes more widespread, the safety risks associated with these devices are increasingly important. Anker’s recent recalls highlight the need for manufacturers to implement stringent safety protocols and quality checks.
