Anthropic has officially taken the crown in the artificial intelligence race. The company behind Claude AI has become the world’s most valuable AI startup after raising a staggering $65 billion in fresh funding, pushing its valuation to nearly $965 billion. In a dramatic shift in the AI industry, Anthropic has now overtaken OpenAI, the company that sparked the global AI boom with ChatGPT.

The funding round marks one of the largest private investments ever seen in the technology sector and highlights how aggressively investors are betting on the future of artificial intelligence.

Anthropic’s Massive Leap Ahead

The latest funding round included major investors such as Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. The investment pushed Anthropic’s post-money valuation close to the trillion-dollar mark, an extraordinary feat for a startup founded just five years ago.

What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the speed of Anthropic’s growth. Earlier this year in February, the company raised $30 billion at a valuation of $380 billion. In just a few months, that valuation has more than doubled, showing how quickly investor confidence in AI companies is accelerating.

The company says the new funding will primarily be used to expand AI safety research and strengthen the computing infrastructure powering Claude, its flagship AI assistant.

Claude Emerges As A Serious ChatGPT Rival

For nearly three years, OpenAI dominated the generative AI landscape through the massive popularity of ChatGPT. The chatbot became the fastest-growing consumer application in history and turned OpenAI into the face of the AI revolution.

However, the gap between ChatGPT and competitors is beginning to narrow.

According to data shared by SensorTower with Forbes, ChatGPT accounted for 47% of global AI app downloads during the second quarter of 2026 so far. While still dominant, the number is significantly lower than the 67% market share it held during the same period last year.

At the same time, Anthropic’s Claude has witnessed explosive adoption. Claude now represents 14% of AI app downloads globally, compared to roughly 1% a year ago. The rapid rise signals that users and businesses are increasingly exploring alternatives to ChatGPT as the AI ecosystem becomes more competitive.

Anthropic says demand for Claude has surged among enterprise customers, developers and paid subscribers looking for reliable AI tools for productivity, coding and research.

Built By Former OpenAI Leaders

Anthropic’s story becomes even more fascinating because it was founded by former OpenAI executives. The company was launched in 2021 by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei along with several ex-OpenAI researchers.

The founders positioned Anthropic differently from many competitors by heavily emphasizing AI safety and responsible development from the beginning. That focus has helped the company attract both investors and enterprise customers concerned about the long-term risks of advanced AI systems.

According to Forbes, Anthropic has now raised more than $130 billion in total funding since its launch. The company also revealed that its revenue run rate recently crossed $47 billion, highlighting how quickly AI businesses are scaling.

Partnership With SpaceX Boosts Computing Power

Anthropic has also expanded its ambitions through a partnership with SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will gain access to SpaceX’s powerful “Colossus” supercomputer infrastructure. The company believes the system will significantly improve performance for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers while helping support the growing demand for AI services.

Access to advanced computing infrastructure has become one of the biggest competitive advantages in the AI race, especially as companies build increasingly complex models that require enormous processing power.

Growing Influence Brings Growing Scrutiny

Despite its success, Anthropic is also facing increasing political and regulatory pressure in the United States.

The company recently found itself in conflict with the US government after refusing to provide unrestricted access to certain AI models. Anthropic argued that such access could potentially enable mass surveillance programs or autonomous weapons development.

The dispute intensified after the Pentagon reportedly labeled the company a “national security supply chain risk.” Anthropic is now challenging the designation in court, adding another layer of complexity to its rapid rise.

Still, investor enthusiasm around the company remains incredibly strong. With fresh capital, soaring revenues and rapidly growing adoption of Claude, Anthropic has firmly established itself as one of the most powerful companies in the global AI industry.

For now, the company that was once seen as an underdog has officially moved ahead of the very organization its founders once helped build.
