Just a few months ago, artificial intelligence startup Anthropic was pacing steadily with nearly $1 billion in annualized revenue. Now, it has catapulted into a whole new league—hitting a staggering $3 billion run rate by the end of May 2025. This rapid growth is more than just a financial milestone; it signals a shift in how businesses are embracing AI technology.
According to individuals familiar with the company’s performance, Anthropic crossed the $2 billion threshold in March before adding another billion to its annualized figure just two months later. Much of this success is being fueled not by flashy consumer apps, but by a quiet revolution inside the workplace—where businesses are turning to Anthropic’s AI models for serious tasks, especially in software development.
AI That Writes Code: A Game-Changer for Businesses
One of Anthropic’s biggest strengths lies in its ability to help companies write code. Its AI models have become increasingly popular among businesses looking to automate software development tasks. This area of AI, often referred to as “code generation,” has seen a spike in adoption over the past several months, with Anthropic emerging as a go-to provider.
Backed by tech powerhouses like Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and Amazon, the San Francisco-based startup has carved out a name for itself with tools that are more than just digital assistants—they’re problem solvers. And that appeal is proving lucrative. Businesses aren’t just experimenting with these tools anymore; they’re integrating them into their operations.
Outpacing SaaS Benchmarks
Anthropic’s growth is catching the attention of investors and industry watchers alike. Alex Clayton, a general partner at venture firm Meritech Capital, said he hasn’t seen anything like it. “We’ve analyzed IPOs from over 200 software companies. This kind of growth rate just doesn’t happen,” Clayton remarked. Though not personally invested in Anthropic, his comparison underscores the company’s rapid rise.
For context, it took cloud computing giant Snowflake six quarters to grow its annualized revenue from $1 billion to $2 billion. Anthropic did that—and more—in just half that time. While some of its revenue comes from consumer subscriptions to its Claude chatbot, most of its growth appears to stem from enterprise customers buying access to its models and tools.
A Different Path Than OpenAI
Though Anthropic and OpenAI both build generative AI tools, they’re not following the same path. OpenAI has become a household name thanks to its popular chatbot ChatGPT, which consumers use for everything from writing emails to answering trivia. Most of OpenAI’s revenue reportedly comes from paid subscriptions to that chatbot.
Anthropic, on the other hand, is seeing stronger traction with businesses rather than individual users. Its Claude chatbot hasn’t caught on as widely in the consumer market—web traffic data from April 2025 shows it attracted just 2% of the traffic ChatGPT received, according to analytics firm Similarweb. But in terms of enterprise use, especially where coding support is needed, Claude is gaining ground fast.
Meanwhile, OpenAI projects its total revenue will hit $12 billion by the end of 2025, up from $3.7 billion last year. However, that figure represents actual revenue rather than the “annualized” revenue metric Anthropic is using, making direct comparisons somewhat difficult.
The Business of Enterprise AI
Anthropic’s focus on enterprise AI is clearly paying off. More and more companies are moving beyond pilot programs and starting to embed AI tools into their core workflows. From generating code to analyzing documents and optimizing operations, generative AI is no longer just a futuristic concept—it’s becoming a foundational part of how businesses operate.
Even as Anthropic scales, it remains an underdog when it comes to consumer visibility. But in the boardroom, it’s making a different kind of impact. Organizations that want smart, task-oriented AI tools are turning to Claude, even if it doesn’t trend on social media the way ChatGPT does.
Big Funding, Bigger Ambitions
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees who had differing views on the direction of AI development. Since then, the company has attracted billions in funding—most recently raising $3.5 billion earlier this year. That latest round valued the startup at $61.4 billion. For comparison, OpenAI is currently estimated to be worth around $300 billion.
That gap may seem wide, but Anthropic’s momentum suggests it’s on a serious upward trajectory. The company’s enterprise-first strategy, combined with strong backing from tech giants and a reputation for high-performing models, makes it a formidable force in the AI sector.
