The iPhone 16 is here and some of the most spectacular improvements include that all refreshed models starting from the iPhone 16 up to the 16 Pro Max, will have 8GB RAM. But what does that mean for you, the everyday user and why is it such a hot topic of conversation right now?
8GB of RAM – Why Should You Care?
In the context of smartphone operating systems, the concept of RAM works in such a way that, the higher the RAM, the more your phone can multitask and do many things simultaneously without lagging or freezing, as it is seen when an iPhone is said to be stuck. The new iPhone 16 will feature 8 GB RAM, which will enable you efficiently perform many tasks at the same time.
Johny Srouji, Apple’s VP of hardware technology, recently spoke to this in an interview where he stated that this RAM isn’t Santa Claus. It is a change that will really count, particularly when it comes to operations such as high end gaming. Everyone who tried ‘gaming’ on an older phone knows this feeling – a game lags, freezes, and in the end you do. However, with 8GB RAM, your iPhone 16 will not have any issue running even the most graphics-intensive games.
Apple Intelligence – The Secret of Success
Finally, it is time to discuss why Apple thought it would be time to transition to 8GB of RAM. In the words of Srouji, it is all due to what he termed as Apple Intelligence. This is Apple’s new set of artificially intelligent features that aims to optimize your phone: Apple Intelligence is like an assistant for your phones where your phone can make better decisions, it can function better, and it can do things more efficiently.
However, there’s a catch. Although Apple Intelligence will be released alongside the iOS 18, the new version will not be compatible with iPhone 15 which has only 6 GB of RAM. That, quite naturally, is because Apple Intelligence requires that extra RAM to excel and be its version of the best. In that case, to get the full value of Apple’s AI features, it may just be worth it to level up to the iPhone 16.
Wait, There’s More!
In addition to the increased RAM and Apple Intelligence, iPhone 16 model that will be the topic of this article, offers a slew of other enhancements as well. Another feature that Srouji mentioned during the interview is the new A18 chip, which is equivalent to the engine that drives the phone. Combined with the 8GB of RAM, this chip is designed to make your phone faster, more efficient and better optimized for things like video and image processing.
And don’t worry about your phone potentially overheating during that period either or at any other time. Other aspects that Apple has considered are thermal design meaning your iPhone 16 will not heat up regardless of usage.
What About the iPhone 15?
If you are thinking, ‘Well, I just bought the iPhone 15, what is this?’ – know that you are not the only one out there thinking this way. However, to some extent, the iPhone 15 Pro will also support some of these novelties, but the iPhone 15 simply will not be able to fully apply Apple Intelligence. This is so because it is equipped with only 6GB RAM which is insufficient to support new AI features that will be incorporated in the new iOS 18.
The iPhone 15 is still a beautiful phone, and you will be able to avail many other aspects that Apple has to provide. However, if you want the glamor of Apple Intelligence then perhaps you should keep a keen eye on the iPhone 16.
