Apple Faces a Defining Leadership Reset as Senior Executives Depart in Waves

Apple is moving through one of the most dramatic executive transitions in its history, as a sweeping wave of senior-level exits reshapes the company from the top down. This is the most significant management restructuring the company has seen since the passing of cofounder Steve Jobs in 2011. The changes stretch across some of Apple’s most vital business areas, including artificial intelligence, design, legal affairs, environmental policy, and core operations.

What makes this moment particularly striking is its timing. Apple is under growing pressure from competitors in artificial intelligence, increasing global regulatory scrutiny, and rising expectations to deliver breakthrough products beyond its traditional lineup. The scale of this leadership reset signals that Apple is preparing for a very different future.

Key Exits at the Highest Levels

Apple recently confirmed that two long-serving executives are preparing to step down. Lisa Jackson, Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, is set to leave as soon as next month. Kate Adams, the company’s General Counsel and chief legal officer since 2017, is expected to exit in late 2026.

Both leaders played major roles in shaping Apple’s public stance on sustainability, privacy, and regulatory engagement. Their departures are not isolated events, but part of a broader pattern of leadership change that is accelerating across the company’s executive ranks.

Major Departures Across Design, AI, and Operations

The pace and scale of recent exits have been unmatched during CEO Tim Cook’s leadership. John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of artificial intelligence, recently announced his retirement in a move that sent ripples through the tech industry. At the same time, Apple’s design leadership has been heavily disrupted.

Alan Dye, who took over user interface responsibilities after Jony Ive left in 2019, has been recruited by Meta. Alongside him, senior design director Billy Sorrentino also departed for Meta, weakening one of Apple’s most historically influential internal teams.

On the operational side, Jeff Williams, the company’s longtime Chief Operating Officer and a widely discussed potential successor to Tim Cook, retired after spending 27 years with Apple. Shortly afterward, Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri stepped back from his role, further thinning the ranks of Apple’s long-serving leadership.

AI Division Hit by Talent Exodus

Apple’s artificial intelligence division has faced some of the most intense internal disruption. Ruoming Pang, who led the company’s AI foundation models team, left the company and joined Meta, reportedly taking around 100 engineers with him. His exit marked one of the largest concentrated losses of technical talent Apple has seen in recent years.

Additional high-profile departures soon followed. Ke Yang, who oversaw AI-powered web search functions for Siri, and Jian Zhang, who led Apple’s AI robotics initiatives, both left the company. Together, these exits have fueled serious questions about Apple’s long-term competitiveness in AI, an area where rivals are moving aggressively.

Tim Cook’s Succession Planning Comes Into Focus

While each executive departure has its own impact, the overall timing points to a broader strategy shift. Bloomberg and the Financial Times have reported that Apple has accelerated internal succession planning in preparation for Tim Cook’s anticipated retirement around 2026.

Cook, who has led the company since 2011, turned 65 in November and has overseen Apple’s dramatic rise in value, growing the company from roughly $350 billion to around $4 trillion. Reports suggest that John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, has emerged as a leading internal candidate to eventually take over as CEO.

A Possible Shift in Leadership Philosophy

If Ternus is chosen, it would mark a significant departure from Apple’s recent leadership tradition. For much of the past decade, Apple has relied on leaders with deep operational and supply chain expertise. Ternus, in contrast, is known for his hands-on focus on product engineering, leading development efforts for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

This potential shift reflects mounting criticism of Apple’s recent strategic direction. Products such as the Vision Pro headset and the ultimately abandoned Apple Car project have drawn mixed reactions. At the same time, Apple’s slower progress in artificial intelligence has highlighted the need for stronger technical and engineering-driven leadership at the top.

New Appointments Signal Structural Consolidation

Apple has already begun putting new leadership pieces in place. Jennifer Newstead, currently Meta’s chief legal officer, is scheduled to join Apple as general counsel starting March 1, 2026. Her role will combine legal oversight with responsibility for government affairs, effectively merging duties previously held by Kate Adams and Lisa Jackson.

This move signals a broader internal restructuring focused on consolidating power and streamlining leadership roles.

In the design group, Alan Dye will be replaced by Stephen Lemay, a veteran inside Apple’s design ecosystem. Lemay has worked on nearly every major Apple interface since the late 1990s, including the original iPhone. His appointment has reportedly been received positively inside the company, as many view him as closely aligned with Apple’s traditional design DNA.

To stabilize its artificial intelligence efforts, Apple is turning to Amar Subramanya to replace John Giannandrea. Subramanya brings extensive experience, having spent roughly 16 years leading AI strategy initiatives at Google and later holding a short tenure at Microsoft.
