Apple has released the first developer beta of macOS 26.1 (Tahoe), allowing registered developers to test the upcoming update ahead of public release. The build number is indicated as 25C5031i.
This comes after the official rollout of macOS 26.0 and its initial point update, and signals Apple’s move into the next phase of its macOS cycle, refinement, performance tweaks, bug-fixes and incremental feature enhancements.

How to Install the Beta

For developers interested in testing it, the steps are straightforward:

  • Backup your Mac before installing the beta.
  • Navigate to System Settings → General → Software Update.
  • In the dropdown menu for Beta Updates, select the macOS Developer Beta channel.
Once installed, the Mac will be running the developer version of macOS 26.1 and users can explore what’s changed and report issues to Apple.

What’s Expected Inside macOS 26.1

The changes are still being discovered, several key areas of focus emerge:

AI and Model Support

One key theme for this update appears to be Apple’s expansion of AI capabilities and model integration across platforms. The beta suggests that macOS 26.1 (and subsequent 26.2) may include support for anth-related models such as MCP (from Anthropic) and broadened access for third-party models within Apple’s “Image Playground” environment.

This signals Apple is continuing to ramp its Apple Intelligence efforts and positioning the Mac as a key node in its AI-enabled ecosystem.

Performance, Stability & Foundation

Given the relatively minor version number 26.1 rather than a full new major release the emphasis is naturally on performance improvements, bug fixes, and enhancing stability. Developers testing this build are likely to focus on compatibility with existing apps, regressions in macOS 26.0 features, and further polish of Apple’s new design-language changes.

Preview of 26.2 Features

Interestingly, 9to5Mac notes that this beta actually precedes what will be labelled macOS 26.2, suggesting Apple may fold incremental changes into the next minor update. The article mentions that macOS 26.2 developer beta is already available under build number 25C5031i. This means 26.1 may in practice be a bridging release, or the build numbering reflects internal Apple planning rather than public versioning convention.

Why This Matters for Mac Users and Developers

For Mac users (especially power users and developers), this release is meaningful for several reasons:

  • Early access to fixes: Users participating in the beta programme can access bug fixes and performance enhancements earlier than the general public, potentially improving daily experience.
  • Developer preparation: App developers will use this build to test compatibility, fix any broken functionality, prepare for the future public rollout and make use of any new APIs or model-support changes.
  • Ecosystem continuity: Apple is showing that even after the major macOS 26 redesign, it continues to support the platform with regular updates. This reassures enterprise customers and pros users that macOS remains actively maintained.

The macOS Tahoe 26.1 developer beta marks another step in Apple’s ongoing commitment to refining the Mac platform. With this release, Apple is focusing on stability, AI-model integration and developer readiness, while signalling that bigger changes (especially around model support) are on the horizon. For developers and advanced users, jumping into the beta offers an early glimpse of what’s coming; for general users, it’s a reminder that macOS updates remain active but that the most dramatic new features may still be ahead.
