Apple is set to launch its next-generation smartphone lineup the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, and early leaks suggest some of the most significant changes in recent years. The new series is expected to bring display and performance upgrades across all models, while also introducing a brand-new variant: the iPhone 17 Air. This addition is expected to replace the Plus model, signaling a shift in Apple’s design and product strategy.

Alongside these hardware upgrades, the iPhone 17 lineup will debut iOS 26, which is rumored to bring enhanced AI features and deeper system integration. Let’s take a closer look at what consumers can expect from Apple’s upcoming flagship devices.

New Lineup: Meet the iPhone 17 Air

In a surprising move, Apple is reportedly phasing out the iPhone Plus variant and introducing a sleeker, lighter alternative the iPhone 17 Air. This device is expected to feature a thinner and more streamlined design, targeting users who prefer a high-end experience without the bulk of larger phones. The iPhone 17 Air could become the ideal middle ground between the base iPhone 17 and the Pro series, offering a premium feel and next-gen capabilities.

This new addition will likely appeal to those who find the standard iPhone too limiting and the Pro Max too large. While Apple has not confirmed these rumors, industry insiders suggest that this move aligns with the company’s broader strategy to refine its product categories and offer more personalized choices to consumers.

Display Upgrades Across the Board With a Catch

One of the most talked-about features is the display refresh rate enhancements across the iPhone 17 lineup. According to a leak from reputable Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS), all models will get high refresh rate displays a long-awaited upgrade, especially for the standard iPhone variants.

However, DCS added a caveat: fans should “lower expectations appropriately” when it comes to the base models. While the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will likely receive an upgrade to 90Hz refresh rates, they may still lack ProMotion technology, which is exclusive to the Pro models. ProMotion utilizes LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) panels that allow dynamic refresh rates between 1Hz and 120Hz, significantly improving battery efficiency and user experience.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to retain and refine these LTPO displays, possibly with better brightness, contrast, and energy efficiency. If accurate, this means a more immersive and responsive visual experience will remain exclusive to Apple’s top-tier models.

Power Boost: A19 Pro Chip to Push Performance Boundaries

In terms of performance, the iPhone 17 Pro series is expected to introduce Apple’s new A19 Pro chip, built on the same 3nm architecture as its predecessor, the A18 Pro. Despite using the same fabrication process, the A19 Pro is rumored to deliver substantial performance gains.

According to DCS, the A19 Pro chip will score over 4,000 in Geekbench 6’s single-core test and more than 10,000 in multi-core, marking at least a 15% performance improvement over the previous generation. If these numbers hold true, the iPhone 17 Pro series could outpace even the fastest Android smartphones, reinforcing Apple’s dominance in the performance space.

This jump in power could be pivotal for Apple’s AI initiatives, which are expected to take center stage in iOS 26. With more advanced neural processing capabilities, users could see smarter Siri interactions, real-time language translation, and improved camera features powered by on-device intelligence.

iOS 26 and the Future of On-Device AI

All iPhone 17 models will launch with iOS 26, which is anticipated to bring a slew of AI-driven features. These enhancements will likely focus on personalization, automation, and real-time contextual awareness.

Although Apple has kept details under wraps, insiders expect on-device generative AI models capable of completing tasks like text summarization, email drafting, and advanced photo editing without needing to connect to the cloud. With rising concerns over data privacy, Apple is positioning its AI approach as private, secure, and hardware-accelerated, which could distinguish it from competitors.

The A19 Pro chip’s neural engine will play a critical role in enabling these experiences, and even the standard A18 chip (expected in iPhone 17 and 17 Air) is likely to see modest upgrades to support select AI features.

The iPhone 17 series looks set to usher in a new phase for Apple smartphones. With a refreshed lineup, dynamic display upgrades, and a performance boost via the A19 Pro, Apple appears to be responding to long-standing demands for innovation across its entire product range not just its Pro models.

The addition of the iPhone 17 Air indicates a strategic shift aimed at broadening appeal without diluting premium features. Combined with the promise of AI-forward iOS 26, Apple is clearly positioning the iPhone 17 series as not just a smartphone but a smarter companion for the modern user.

As we approach the anticipated September 2025 launch, all eyes will be on Cupertino to see how much of this speculation translates into reality and how Apple plans to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive and AI-driven mobile landscape.
