Apple is poised for a significant spring hardware refresh, headlined by the imminent launch of the M4 MacBook Air lineup. While excitement builds for new Macs and iPads, the much-anticipated AI-driven overhaul of Siri faces a potential delay, impacting Apple’s broader artificial intelligence strategy.

The M4 MacBook Air, expected to launch in both 13-inch and 15-inch models, is rumored to arrive as early as this week. This refresh, focusing on internal upgrades, will feature Apple’s latest M4 chipset, promising enhanced performance and efficiency. Apple stores are reportedly experiencing dwindling stock of the current M3 MacBook Air, signaling an impending announcement. No major design changes are anticipated, maintaining the sleek and lightweight profile that defines the Air series.

Following the MacBook Air, Apple is also expected to release updated iPad Air and 11th-generation iPad models. These devices will likely see processor upgrades, with the iPad Air potentially adopting the M3 or M4 chip, and the new iPad possibly integrating the A17 Pro chip to bolster Apple Intelligence capabilities. These iPad refreshes are anticipated to occur in late March or early April, further expanding Apple’s hardware offerings.

However, the spotlight on Apple’s AI advancements dims somewhat with the news of a potential delay to Siri’s significant update. The conversational AI revamp, initially slated for iOS 19, may now be pushed to iOS 20. This major architectural overhaul aims to make Siri more conversational and contextually aware, similar to leading AI chatbots. The delay is attributed to the complexities of integrating large language models (LLMs) and ensuring seamless user experience.

Despite this setback, Siri will receive incremental improvements in iOS 18.5, expected in May. These updates will focus on enhancing on-screen awareness and improving in-app controls, providing users with more intuitive interactions. iOS 19, later this year, is not expected to contain a large suite of Apple Intelligence features, which means users will have to wait longer for the full conversational AI experience.

Apple’s internal data reportedly indicates low real-world usage of Apple Intelligence, highlighting the challenge of driving adoption. The delayed rollout of advanced AI features, particularly conversational Siri, could further impact user engagement with Apple’s AI ecosystem.

In the short term, Apple fans can look forward to the M4 MacBook Air and new iPad models. These hardware updates will provide performance enhancements and maintain Apple’s commitment to innovation. However, the potential delay of Siri’s AI overhaul raises questions about Apple’s AI strategy and its ability to compete in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Apple is still providing AI features to users, but the most anticipated feature has been delayed.
