Apple to Assemble India-Made AirPods by Early 2025: Report

According to a report from Bloomberg News, it adds an AirPods assembly line to operations in India from early 2025. This is part of a strategy by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) to diversify its manufacturing activities outside China due to geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions.

Foxconn’s Role in Manufacturing

Foxconn Technology Group (OTCPK: FXCOF), otherwise known formally as Hon Hai Precision (OTCPK: HNHAF), will be forming an association under its new facility at Telangana, India, for the assembly of AirPods. This facility is presently undergoing trial production, which is expected to ramp up speedily in the first quarter of 2025.

With a long-standing association with Apple, Foxconn bears the major grunt of assembling products of the brand such as the iPhone. This will now make the AirPods the second major Apple product to be manufactured here, a feat in its localization endeavour.

India’s enlargement in Apple’s supply chain

Apple decided to produce AirPods in India, following the successful exportation of India-made iPhones. This development came with a report that Apple exported 6 billion dollars worth of iPhones from the Indian market in the six months ending September 2024. Foxconn, which handles half of Indian exports, leads this charge together with others like Pegatron and Tata Electronics.

India’s extensive role in Apple’s supply chain accords with the long-term goal of the company to lessen its dependence on China. The shifts signify that India is fast emerging as an important player in the global electronics manufacturing industry.

Implication of the Market as well as Strategic Significance

AirPods are among the leading products for Apple in the true wireless stereo (TWS) segment. Moreover, in the second quarter of 2024, Apple shipped 16.8 million units of AirPods, covering 21.9% of the global market as per research firm Canalys.

This new factory in Telangana will contribute much to Apple’s global AirPods supply chain. Even though these India-assembled AirPods will most likely be sold outside of India as the primary market, it adds more flexibility and cost efficiency to Apple’s operations.

The Growth of Electronics Manufacturing in India

Indian electronics manufacturing is quite upbeat with government backing like in the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The expansion of manufacturing capabilities by Apple adds further credibility to India being the potential future global electronics manufacturing hub.

In 2023, Jabil-another Apple vendor began shipping AirPods enclosures (plastic bodies) from India to China and Vietnam. This gives a substantial amount of evolution from previously being assembled in full in the destination country to having it completely assembled in India.

Reducing Dependence From China

There are other several factors behind Apple’s diversification, such as the increasing geopolitical tensions between the United States and China, the injuries that travel in supply chains, and the need to bring down the dependence on a single country. It is relocating the assembly of AirPods to India as it would secure a more resilient supply chain and save on costs for domestic growth.

Future Outlook

The scenario where making AirPods in India by Apple will come into play could create a significant long-term impact on both the Indian economy and Apple’s international operations. In other words, more jobs would be added, leading to more investments coming from outside the country into the electronics sector in India, and encouraging many of the global top technology companies to consider moving their production facilities.
