Apple plans to launch AI features in China from May, aiming to tap into a large and competitive market. Apple is preparing to introduce its artificial intelligence features in China as early as May, according to a report by Bloomberg News. The tech giant is working to modify its AI system, known as Apple Intelligence, to comply with Chinese regulations.

To navigate legal restrictions, Apple has deployed teams in both China and the United States. These teams are focused on adapting AI products to meet local legal requirements. Apple is collaborating with Chinese companies Baidu and Alibaba to integrate AI features into iPhones sold in China.

One of the biggest challenges is obtaining regulatory approval. China mandates official certification for AI products before they can be sold. Apple and Alibaba have submitted their AI features to China’s internet regulator for review. To ensure compliance, Apple is working with Alibaba on an on-device AI system for Macs, iPads, and iPhones sold in China.

Localized AI Features

Baidu will enhance AI functionalities, while Alibaba will oversee content moderation to meet local standards. If any content is deemed inappropriate, Chinese authorities may instruct Alibaba to request adjustments from Apple. AI features that do not meet legal requirements could be temporarily disabled until updated.

Imported iPhones will not use the localized AI system. However, devices sold within China will exclusively use the local AI setup. Some AI features will rely on foreign servers, similar to Apple’s existing partnership with Guizhou-Cloud Big Data for iCloud services in China.

New Features and Market Competition

To comply with local regulations, Apple plans to launch AI features in China from May with modifications for legal approval. One of the first features expected to launch is Visual Intelligence, powered by Baidu’s AI technology. This feature will be introduced on the iPhone 16, allowing users to scan objects and access related online information.

Apple’s move into China’s AI market comes amid increasing government scrutiny and growing competition from domestic tech companies. The company has not yet announced an exact launch date for its AI products in China.

Challenges and Opportunities for Apple in China’s AI Market

Apple’s plan to launch artificial intelligence features in China by May shows its determination to tap into one of the world’s largest tech markets. However, this move is not without challenges. Apple must navigate strict regulations and fierce competition from local tech giants like Baidu and Alibaba.

China has stringent rules for AI products. Companies must get official approval before selling AI-enabled devices. Apple is working with Alibaba to create an on-device AI system that meets China’s regulatory standards. This approach shows Apple’s willingness to comply with local laws but also raises concerns about censorship.

Alibaba will control AI-generated content to ensure it meets China’s strict content regulations. If authorities find any information inappropriate, they can ask Alibaba to modify the AI system. This means Apple’s AI features may face limitations, affecting user experience and freedom of information.

To compete with local tech giants, Apple plans to launch AI features in China from May, offering new functionalities on iPhones. Apple’s attempt to launch AI features in China is a strategic move to expand its market share. Apple faces tough competition from Chinese tech giants Baidu and Alibaba. Baidu’s advanced AI technology, including its Visual Intelligence feature, will be integrated into iPhones sold in China. This feature allows users to scan objects and find related online information. However, Baidu’s strong presence in the local market could overshadow Apple’s AI capabilities.
