After years of speculation and behind-the-scenes development, Apple’s much-anticipated iPhone Fold appears to be edging closer to reality. Unlike its Android rivals, Apple has taken a slower, more methodical approach to entering the foldable smartphone market and according to a new leak, it is still refining the device’s specifications, including screen size and camera system.

Although no official announcement has been made, sources familiar with the matter especially prolific leaker “Digital Chat Station” on Weibo have provided a steady stream of updates. These reports suggest that Apple is testing several prototypes and experimenting with design variations to perfect the device before launch.

Shifting Screen Dimensions: From 7.8 Inches to 7.58 Inches

One of the most frequently changing aspects of the rumored iPhone Fold is its internal display size. As of June 2025, the latest leak from Digital Chat Station claims that the internal foldable screen now measures 7.58 inches diagonally, a slight reduction from earlier reports.

This is not the first time the screen size has fluctuated. Back in March 2025, the same leaker reported a 7.74-inch display, which was quickly revised in April to 7.76 inches. Adding to the confusion, respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested in March that the screen would measure 7.8 inches.

While these changes may seem minor, they point to one significant insight: Apple is still in active development, likely testing multiple prototypes with slight variations to determine the ideal balance between size, usability, and form factor. This theory aligns with an earlier February 2024 report suggesting that at least two prototypes are being evaluated simultaneously.

Despite the size discrepancies, one aspect remains consistent the display resolution. Multiple sources agree the screen will feature a resolution of 2,713 x 1,920 pixels, indicating a high-quality panel that could rival or surpass existing foldables from competitors like Samsung and Huawei.

Camera Capabilities: Dual-Lens System Confirmed

Another key development from the most recent leak is confirmation of the dual rear camera system on the iPhone Fold. This supports an earlier prediction by Kuo that Apple would avoid a single-camera setup, even for a device expected to be thinner than its traditional iPhone siblings.

Digital Chat Station now adds that this dual system will include 48-megapixel sensors, further aligning the foldable device with the camera capabilities of Apple’s standard flagship models. Previously, it was speculated that Apple might opt for a minimal camera setup akin to the rumored iPhone 17 Slim to maintain a slim profile. However, this new leak suggests Apple is not compromising on camera performance.

Interestingly, the leaker also claims that every model in the iPhone 17 lineup will include 48MP cameras, which may indicate a broader hardware standardization effort by Apple. Whether this is based on internal knowledge or logical extrapolation remains uncertain, but it adds to growing speculation about the convergence of camera quality across future iPhone tiers.

The Foldable Race: Apple vs. Android

While Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and others have already established a strong foothold in the foldable market, Apple’s delayed entry may work in its favor. Industry insiders believe Apple is determined to solve major pain points especially display creasing and device thickness before launching its own iteration.

Unlike many current foldables that suffer from visible creases or structural fragility, Apple is reportedly investing in a crease-free hinge mechanism, possibly inspired by patented designs or early internal testing. The goal, sources say, is to offer a foldable device that feels just as seamless and premium as a traditional iPhone.

Moreover, Apple’s hesitance may be strategic. Rather than racing to be first, the company appears focused on perfecting user experience, software integration, and durability, all traits Apple is historically known for emphasizing before launching a new product category.

Despite these exciting updates, there is still no confirmed launch date for the iPhone Fold. Some insiders speculate that Apple may unveil the device in late 2026 or early 2027, possibly as a high-end “iPhone Ultra Fold” targeting early adopters and professionals.

Several hurdles remain, including:

  • Battery efficiency for larger, foldable displays
  • Software optimization for multitasking and screen transitions
  • Manufacturing scale and yield rate for the unique hinge mechanism
  • Pricing strategy, which will likely place the iPhone Fold at a premium segment

Given these unknowns, it’s safe to assume that Apple is still refining every aspect of the product from display technology and hinge design to camera features and software capabilities.

While leaks around the iPhone Fold continue to shift in detail, the broader picture is becoming clearer: Apple is serious about foldables, and it’s investing heavily to ensure its debut product lives up to the brand’s standards.

With a reported 7.58-inch internal screen, 48MP dual cameras, and a focus on innovation without compromise, the iPhone Fold could eventually set a new benchmark in the foldable category. For now, Apple fans and industry observers will have to settle for whispers and rumors but if history is any guide, Apple won’t launch until it’s confident it can redefine the category.
