Audi Brings Ghost of Speed to Life: Rebuilding the 1930s Auto Union Type 52

Car enthusiasts, prepare to have your minds blown. Audi has achieved the seemingly impossible: bringing a lost dream machine from the 1930s roaring back to life. The Auto Union Type 52, a 16-cylinder monster that never left the drawing board, has been meticulously recreated using a combination of historical documents and modern engineering.

The Type 52, also known as the “Schnellsportwagen” (German for “fast sports car”), was a project envisioned by Auto Union, the predecessor to Audi, during their dominant run in Grand Prix racing with the Silver Arrow race cars. The idea was a thrilling one: take the heart-pounding power of those racers and build a road-legal supercar that could turn heads and scorch pavement.

The original Type 52 boasted a lightweight chassis and a monstrous 4.4-liter, 16-cylinder engine churning out an estimated 200 horsepower. This was enough to propel the car to a projected top speed of 125 miles per hour, an unthinkable feat for most vehicles of that era.

However, the project was tragically cut short. The looming shadow of World War II forced the Auto Union to shift resources, and the Type 52 remained a tantalizing “what if” in the annals of automotive history.

Fast forward to 2023. In a remarkable feat of automotive archaeology, Audi decided to resurrect the Type 52. Using a treasure trove of original sketches and blueprints, the project began. Partnering with Crosthwaite & Gardner, a renowned historic racing car manufacturer, Audi embarked on an ambitious journey to build a car that existed only on paper.

A Masterpiece Reborn: The Engineering Feat of the Type 52

The result is a breathtaking testament to engineering prowess and historical reverence. The recreated Type 52 retains the essence of the original design. The body features a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette with a long wheelbase to accommodate the mid-mounted engine. The four rear-hinged doors hint at a surprisingly spacious three-seat interior, a unique feature for a car of this pedigree.

However, under the hood (or rather, the rear deck), some subtle modifications were made. The recreated engine, while still a 16-cylinder marvel, boasts a larger 6.0-liter displacement compared to the original design. This, coupled with modern fuel delivery and supercharging technology, likely translates to a significant power increase over the original concept. The exact figures remain undisclosed for now, but one can only imagine the exhilarating performance this machine is capable of.

The unveiling of the Type 52 took place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2023. The car caused a stir among enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Witnessing a phantom from the past brought to life was a powerful reminder of the audacity and innovation that once defined the golden age of racing.

While the recreated Type 52 remains a one-off showpiece, its significance goes beyond mere spectacle. It serves as a bridge between past and present, showcasing how far automotive technology has come while reminding us of the enduring allure of those early automotive dreamers. The Type 52 is a rolling monument to ambition, a testament to the engineers who dared to push boundaries, and a glimpse into what could have been.
