Audi Reshuffles Lineup: A7 and S7 to Exit North America, RS7 Survives

Audi is entering a major restructuring phase, and the shake-up is set to reshape its North American lineup in a big way. The German automaker confirmed that two familiar models, the Audi A7 and S7, will not make the transition into its future portfolio. Instead, Audi plans to streamline its offerings around the A6 family while keeping the performance-heavy RS7 alive.

Goodbye to the A7 and S7

According to a statement provided to Road & Track by an Audi spokesperson, there will be no 2026 model year versions of the A7 or S7 in North America. Both models will be phased out and effectively replaced by the upcoming A6 TFSI sedan, which Audi says is due later this year.

The decision marks a significant change, given that the A7 and S7 have long been celebrated for their sleek sportback design, blending sedan practicality with coupe-like styling. Their absence, however, doesn’t mean the end of that silhouette in Audi’s portfolio.

The A6 Steps Into the Spotlight

The A6 lineup is taking center stage in Audi’s revised strategy. In an unusual move, the brand will use the same nameplate for both gasoline-powered and battery-powered versions of the car. Customers can expect the A6 TFSI for traditional combustion fans, alongside the A6 e-tron, an electric sportback that carries forward the distinctive aerodynamics once associated with the A7.

This dual-path approach underscores Audi’s broader transition into electrification, while still catering to buyers who are not ready to make the switch.

RS7: The Lone Survivor

While the A7 and S7 bow out, Audi isn’t letting go of its performance halo car. The RS7 will continue into the 2026 model year, retaining its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. With a staggering 621 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, the RS7 remains one of Audi’s most exhilarating executive sportbacks — and one of the few left standing in a shrinking performance sedan category.

For enthusiasts, the RS7’s survival is a rare silver lining in an otherwise sobering restructuring.

A Sales Story With Contradictions

The exit of the A7 and S7 might appear odd at first glance, especially since the A7 series reported a 48% year-over-year sales increase through the first half of 2024. However, the story behind those numbers is more complicated.

Analysts point to pre-tariff buying sprees as a likely explanation, with buyers rushing to secure imports before potential trade costs spiked. Audi, which does not manufacture vehicles in the U.S., even paused imports temporarily during the trade war, adding more urgency to those purchases.

Despite the spike, the overall figures remain modest. The A7 line recorded just 1,574 U.S. sales in 2024, a volume difficult to sustain given shifting consumer preferences.

Sedans Under Pressure

The A7 and S7’s departure fits a familiar pattern in today’s market. Sedans and hatchbacks are increasingly losing ground to crossovers and SUVs, which dominate sales charts. Automakers, including Audi, face growing difficulty justifying production of low-volume sedans when SUVs promise stronger returns.

Still, Audi hasn’t completely abandoned the sedan form. Even with the A7 and A4 now discontinued in North America, the brand continues to invest in the A6 lineup, positioning it as both a gas and electric option for the next generation.

What this really means is that Audi isn’t killing the sedan, it’s consolidating. The future may look different, but the essence of the sportback remains, just under a new badge.
