Audi to Revive R8 with Hybrid Power, Aiming for 1000 HP Supercar

Audi is preparing to bring back its iconic R8 supercar with a cutting-edge plug-in hybrid powertrain borrowed from Lamborghini’s latest high-performance machine, the Temerario. According to reports from Autocar, the next-generation R8 will be Audi’s most powerful road car yet, with output figures possibly reaching an astonishing 1000 horsepower.

A Legacy Reborn

After ceasing production of the beloved R8 in 2023, Audi left a noticeable gap in its lineup. Initially, speculation suggested the R8’s successor would be a fully electric supercar, inspired by the PB18 e-tron concept from 2018. However, Audi has now shifted gears, opting for a hybrid approach that aligns with its transition towards electrification while maintaining the visceral performance enthusiasts expect from the R8 badge.

This strategic move continues Audi’s history of collaboration with Lamborghini. The first-generation R8 was closely related to the Gallardo, and its successor shared DNA with the Huracán. Now, the revived R8 will borrow key elements from the new Lamborghini Temerario, ensuring world-class performance wrapped in a more driver-friendly package.

Hybrid Supercar Powerhouse

The upcoming R8 will inherit the Temerario’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, which alone produces 789 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. However, the real magic lies in its trio of electric motors—two powering the front axle and a third sandwiched between the engine and eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Combined, this setup pushes the Lamborghini to a staggering 907 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.

Reports suggest that Audi’s engineers are working on a high-performance variant of the R8 that could push output close to 1000 horsepower. This level of power would enable the next R8 to rocket from 0-60 mph in under 3.0 seconds and surpass the 200 mph mark, making it the fastest and most powerful Audi production car in history.

While the Temerario uses a 3.8-kWh battery for limited electric-only driving, it remains unclear whether Audi will tweak this setup for enhanced efficiency or more electric range. However, the hybrid system will certainly improve overall performance while maintaining Audi’s commitment to sustainability.

Everyday Usability with Supercar Performance

Unlike Lamborghini’s track-focused approach, Audi intends to fine-tune the R8’s hybrid system for everyday drivability. The R8 has always been lauded for blending supercar thrills with relative comfort, and the new model will continue this tradition. Expect a refined interior, advanced digital interfaces, and a range of driving modes that allow the hybrid system to optimize power delivery for different scenarios, from spirited canyon drives to relaxed city commuting.

A Future Racing Icon?

Beyond road-going excitement, the R8’s hybrid evolution could mark a new chapter for Audi’s motorsport ambitions. Reports indicate that the next R8 may serve as the foundation for FIA-homologated race cars, potentially competing in endurance events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Nürburgring 24 Hours. Given Audi’s legendary racing pedigree, this hybrid-powered R8 could spearhead the brand’s push into the next era of motorsport.

Launch Timeline

According to sources, the new Audi R8 is expected to debut in late 2027, and it is available in both coupe and convertible forms. Audi may also append the “e-tron” badge to emphasize its hybrid credentials and align with the brand’s broader electrification strategy.

With a perfect blend of hybrid technology, Lamborghini-inspired engineering, and Audi’s signature everyday usability, the next-generation R8 is shaping up to be a true game-changer in the supercar world. Fans of high-performance machines can expect a thrilling return for Audi’s flagship supercar—one that could redefine the hybrid supercar landscape.
