The BMW M2 has long been revered as one of the last great driver-focused sports cars under $100,000, offering a potent mix of power, balance, and an engaging rear-wheel-drive setup. However, according to a new report from BMWBlog, the German automaker is preparing to introduce an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant of its smallest M car. The M2 xDrive is rumored to enter production in August 2026, adding a new dimension to the beloved coupe’s performance.
AWD Without the Competition Badge
While many of BMW’s more powerful M cars with AWD carry the ‘Competition’ moniker, sources suggest that the M2 xDrive will not adopt this badge. Instead, the new variant will maintain a similar appearance to the current M2, with the only notable distinction likely being an ‘xDrive’ emblem on the trunk lid. The introduction of AWD hints at a shift in BMW’s strategy, catering to drivers who desire enhanced traction and performance in varying road conditions.
Automatic Transmission Only
BMW enthusiasts who prefer a traditional manual transmission may be disappointed to learn that the M2 xDrive is expected to be offered exclusively with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. While this decision aligns with BMW’s push toward optimizing performance, it means that those who prefer to row their gears will have to stick with the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version.
Performance Expectations: A Faster M2?
The addition of AWD naturally brings an increase in weight due to the necessary hardware, with estimates suggesting at least a 100-pound gain. This would push the curb weight of the M2 xDrive to around 3,900 pounds. However, the extra grip provided by the AWD system should more than compensate for the added mass, potentially making this the quickest M2 ever.
The RWD M2 with an automatic transmission currently rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Given that AWD improves off-the-line traction, it is reasonable to expect the M2 xDrive to shave a few tenths off that time, making it a serious contender in the performance coupe segment.

Will the M2 xDrive Get More Power?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the M2 xDrive is whether BMW will give it a power bump. The upcoming M2 CS is expected to feature at least 500 horsepower, leading to speculation that the xDrive version could benefit from a similar increase. However, since it won’t carry the Competition badge, a power boost remains uncertain. For now, the M2 xDrive is likely to stick with the 473-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six found in the current model.
The Future of the RWD Manual M2
Purists who prefer the classic rear-wheel-drive, manual transmission setup can breathe a sigh of relief. Reports indicate that the arrival of the M2 xDrive will not come at the expense of the RWD version, which will continue to be available for those who prioritize a more traditional, engaging driving experience.
BMW Remains Silent on Speculation
When reached for comment, BMW declined to confirm or deny the existence of the M2 xDrive, stating that it does not comment on speculation regarding future models. However, given BMW’s recent expansion of AWD across its M lineup, the possibility of an M2 xDrive seems increasingly likely.
A More Versatile M2?
Introducing an AWD M2 would mark a significant shift for BMW’s entry-level M car, making it more versatile and potentially faster than ever before. While some enthusiasts may lament the loss of a purely RWD setup in this variant, others will welcome AWD’s added performance and year-round usability. As more details emerge over the next year, the M2 xDrive is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated performance cars of 2026.
