BMW is preparing to pull the covers off one of its most important electric cars yet. The all-new Neue Klasse i3 electric sedan will make its global debut on March 18, marking the second model built on BMW’s next-generation EV platform after the upcoming iX3 SUV.

The new i3 isn’t just another electric sedan in BMW’s lineup. It effectively represents the electric counterpart to the next-generation 3 Series and signals the beginning of BMW’s broader shift toward its Neue Klasse design and technology philosophy.

A Familiar Name Returns

The i3 badge may sound familiar to longtime BMW fans. It was previously used for the brand’s quirky carbon-fiber electric hatchback that went out of production in 2022. Now the name is returning, but in a very different form.

This time, the i3 will sit firmly in the premium midsize sedan segment, going head-to-head with rivals like the Tesla Model 3 and upcoming electric offerings such as the Audi A4 e-tron and Mercedes-Benz C-Class EV.

BMW has confirmed that the sedan will be based on the Neue Klasse architecture, the company’s new dedicated EV platform designed to underpin dozens of models over the next decade.

Powertrain Likely Shared With the iX3

While BMW has yet to reveal final specifications, early expectations suggest the i3 will borrow its powertrain from the upcoming iX3 SUV.

That means the sedan could feature a 108.7kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. In the iX3, this configuration produces around 469 horsepower and 645Nm of torque, delivering impressive performance alongside strong efficiency.

The iX3 claims a WLTP driving range of up to 805km, and the i3 may stretch that figure even further. Sedans typically have better aerodynamics than SUVs, which could allow the i3 to travel farther on a single charge.

The platform also introduces an 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast DC charging speeds of up to 400kW. AC charging is expected to top out at 22kW.

Another notable piece of technology is BMW’s new “Heart of Joy” control unit, which works alongside Dynamic Performance Control to manage driving functions in milliseconds, improving responsiveness and handling.

Electric M3 Planned for Later

The i3 won’t be the most powerful variant on the platform for long. BMW’s performance division is already developing an electric M3, which is expected to arrive later in the decade.

Reports suggest the high-performance model could feature a quad-motor setup, delivering extreme levels of power and torque. The electric M3 is also expected to incorporate simulated gear shifts to maintain an engaging driving experience.

Industry timelines indicate that the model could arrive around 2027 or 2028.

Design Inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse

Visually, the production i3 is expected to stay close to the Vision Neue Klasse concept unveiled in 2023.

Recent teaser footage hints at sleek LED headlamps paired with BMW’s illuminated kidney grille. The production car will likely feature smoother body panels than the concept while retaining classic BMW cues like the Hofmeister kink in the rear pillar.

At the rear, horizontally oriented trapezoidal tail lamps similar to the concept car are expected to make their way to the final design.

Minimalist Cabin with Next-Gen Tech

Inside, BMW is leaning heavily into minimalism and digital interfaces.

The i3 is expected to feature a panoramic display that stretches across the windscreen, combined with a 17.9-inch infotainment screen powered by BMW’s upcoming Operating System X.

This new interface will likely form the backbone of BMW’s next generation of connected vehicles.

BMW has confirmed that the Neue Klasse design language and technology will eventually appear in over 40 new or updated models, including the next-generation gasoline-powered 3 Series that will arrive after the electric i3.

For BMW, the Neue Klasse i3 isn’t just another EV launch. It marks the start of a new chapter for the brand’s most iconic sedan lineage.
