Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is rapidly gaining ground on Tesla, outperforming the American EV maker in global sales. In 2024, BYD generated a staggering $170 billion in revenue, surpassing Tesla’s $155.5 billion. The company also reported a 73% surge in net profit, reaching a record $3.3 billion in the fourth quarter.
BYD’s Hong Kong-listed shares have soared over 50% since January, reaching an all-time high. Meanwhile, Tesla has been facing a decline in market share, particularly in regions like the UK, where sales have dropped 45% in just a month. Analysts attribute Tesla’s struggles to growing dissatisfaction with CEO Elon Musk’s controversies, leading some owners to disassociate from the brand.
BYD’s Global Expansion and Market Penetration
BYD’s overseas expansion has been a key driver of its growth. The company’s international shipments rose nearly 72% last year, now accounting for 10% of total sales. To strengthen its presence in Europe, BYD is planning a third manufacturing plant in Germany, reinforcing its ambition to dominate the global EV market.
Graeme Hughes from Griffith University highlights that BYD’s rapid expansion is fueled by heavy investments in manufacturing and technological advancements, making its vehicles more competitive than ever.
BYD’s Super-Fast Charging: A Game Changer
BYD has unveiled groundbreaking charging technology that promises to revolutionize the EV industry. The company’s new Super e-Platform enables peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts, allowing vehicles to gain 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes. This is twice as fast as Tesla’s Superchargers, positioning BYD as a leader in charging innovation.
Founder Wang Chuanfu emphasized that the goal is to eliminate charging anxiety by making EV refueling as fast as traditional gasoline vehicles. The technology relies on an advanced liquid-cooled megawatt flash charging system, ensuring safety and battery longevity.
Impact on Tesla and the EV Market
Tesla, though still holding a market capitalization of $800 billion, faces increasing pressure from BYD’s advancements. Protests and negative sentiments against Tesla and Elon Musk have been rising, with showroom demonstrations and even owners debadging their Teslas in protest.
While Tesla is also working on ultra-fast charging solutions—its latest offering adds 270 kilometers of range in 15 minutes—it still lags behind BYD’s latest innovation. Mercedes-Benz, too, is entering the race, promising 325 kilometers of range in 10 minutes with its upcoming EV.
Challenges for Ultra-Fast Charging Infrastructure
Despite the excitement around five-minute charging, experts warn of infrastructure challenges. In countries like Australia, the fastest chargers currently take 20–30 minutes and require expensive substations. Pitcher Partners’ energy expert Stephen Bragg notes that charging an EV in five minutes under current grid conditions could black out entire suburbs due to massive electricity demands.
The Road Ahead: What’s Next for BYD and Tesla?
Industry experts believe BYD’s breakthroughs could set a new standard for EVs, pushing competitors like Tesla to either develop similar technology or license BYD’s battery solutions. However, Tesla’s edge remains in its self-driving technology, with Elon Musk promising full autonomy in the near future.
As the EV landscape evolves, the competition between BYD and Tesla is set to intensify, shaping the future of electric mobility worldwide.
