In a remarkable development in the electric vehicle (EV) market, BYD, China’s largest EV maker, has made a significant splash with its new mid-size electric SUV, the BYD Song L. This vehicle, which is set to officially launch on December 15, 2023, has already garnered an impressive 11,000 pre-orders in just 17 days since the opening of pre-orders on October 31, 2023. This surge in interest underscores the growing global appetite for electric vehicles and positions BYD as a formidable competitor in the EV space.

Initially unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, the Song L is part of BYD’s Dynasty series and is designed to compete directly with Tesla’s Model Y and ZEEKR 001. Furthermore, the Song L follows the Yuan Plus (Atto 3 overseas), Tang, and Han in the series, showcasing BYD’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup. The design of the Song L is notably similar to the premium Denza N7, which was launched in June, and is based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0.

The Song L is available in five different trims, with prices ranging from 220,000 to 280,000 yuan ($30,700 to $39,000). Customers can choose between single and dual-motor versions. The single motor version offers 150 kW or 230 kW of peak power, while the dual-motor version combines a 150 kW front motor with the rear to deliver a formidable 380 kW of maximum power. This variety in options caters to a wide range of consumer preferences and driving needs.

In terms of battery and range, the Song L is powered by BYD’s Blade battery. The single motor version, equipped with a 71.8 kWh or 87 kWh battery, offers a range of 550 km (341 mi) or 662 km (411 mi) according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) standards, respectively. The dual-motor version, powered by an 87 kWh Blade battery, boasts up to 602 km (374 mi) CLTC range. These impressive range figures are a testament to BYD’s advancements in battery technology and efficiency.

Moreover, BYD is not stopping with the Song L. The company recently revealed another mid-size electric SUV, the Sea Lion 07, as part of its Ocean series. This new model is expected to compete with Tesla’s Model Y in the world’s largest EV market. The Sea Lion 07, designed by former Lamborghini and Audi head designer Wolfgang Egger, now BYD’s chief designer, draws inspiration from sea lions and is expected to lead a new sub-brand of vehicles under the Ocean brand.

The Sea Lion 07 will be priced between 200,000 and 260,000 yuan ($27,700 to $35,900) and will rival Tesla’s Model Y in size. This expansion of BYD’s electric vehicle offerings indicates the company’s aggressive strategy to capture a significant share of the EV market.

This surge in pre-orders for the Song L and the introduction of the Sea Lion 07 come at a time when BYD is closing in on Tesla to become the biggest pure EV maker. In the third quarter, BYD delivered 431,603 vehicles, just shy of Tesla’s 435,059. This competition is intensifying as both companies continue to innovate and expand their offerings, further accelerating the global shift away from gas-powered models.

In conclusion, BYD’s latest developments, particularly the overwhelming response to the Song L and the introduction of the Sea Lion 07, highlight the company’s growing influence in the electric vehicle market. As the world continues to embrace electric mobility, BYD’s innovations and competitive pricing are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transportation.
