In addition to being a trailblazing businesswoman, Leena Nair, the first female CEO of Chanel, is a representation of diversity, inventiveness, and tenacity in leadership. In an interview with Ayesha Karnik, host of the View From The Top series, she recently enthralled an audience at Stanford University by sharing anecdotes from her life and career. Nair discussed her early years, her professional path, and even a humorous encounter with AI that underscores the difficulties of dispelling prejudices in the workplace with humility and humor.

Here’s a look at Leena Nair’s inspiring journey and the impactful lessons she shared with the Stanford community.

Breaking Barriers in Luxury: Nair’s Appointment as Chanel’s CEO

As the first woman of color to head Chanel, a brand that is associated with elegance, luxury, and French fashion, Leena Nair made history in December 2021. Many saw this nomination as a significant change in an industry that has historically been dominated by men, in addition to being a professional milestone. With an emphasis on diversity and honesty while honoring the brand’s illustrious past, Nair’s leadership has introduced fresh viewpoints to Chanel’s brand ethos.

Her journey to the top, however, was anything but easy. Nair grew up in Kolhapur, a small town in Maharashtra, India, where she pursued her engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from Walchand College of Engineering. She later completed her MBA in Human Resources from XLRI Jamshedpur. From there, she embarked on a career that would see her break countless barriers, including being appointed the first female and youngest-ever Chief Human Resources Officer at Unilever. Nair’s appointment as Chanel’s CEO reflects her unmatched tenacity and the industry’s growing recognition of diverse leadership.

The AI Incident: When Chanel’s Female-Led Team Was Portrayed as “All Men in Suits”

While recounting her journey, Nair shared a humorous yet eye-opening experience with ChatGPT, a widely used AI chatbot. During a recent visit to Microsoft, Nair and her team asked ChatGPT to generate an image of the “senior leadership team of Chanel visiting Microsoft.” The result? An image of men in suits, entirely overlooking the female-majority leadership that defines Chanel.

“It’s funny,” Nair said, “This is Chanel. Yes, 76% of my organization is women. Ninety-six percent of my clients are women. Female CEO. It was a 100% male team, not even in fashionable clothes,” she noted with a smile. The incident underscores not only the persistent biases in AI but also how far technology still has to go in accurately reflecting diversity in professional spaces. For Nair, this experience was a reminder of the ongoing work needed to shift perceptions and challenge stereotypes—both in the fashion industry and beyond.

Lessons in Leadership: Paving the Way for Future Generations

Nair’s journey has been marked by a commitment to breaking down barriers, and her role at Chanel is no different. At Stanford, she discussed the unique challenges she faced as a woman of color in leadership, sharing lessons on resilience, empathy, and empowerment. Nair’s career philosophy is rooted in creating inclusive spaces where diversity is celebrated, not just accommodated. She believes that true leadership lies in lifting others up, and her legacy at Chanel is already helping pave the way for the next generation of female and minority leaders.

As Chanel’s CEO, Nair has implemented policies to foster a workplace that not only empowers women but emphasizes creativity and individuality—hallmarks of the Chanel brand. “Leaders should be creators of culture,” she said, underscoring her mission to ensure that Chanel reflects a contemporary, global vision while honoring its rich history.

From Kolhapur to Fortune India’s Most Powerful Women List

Nair, who grew up in a small Indian town, never dreamed she would own one of the most prominent design firms in the world. Her accomplishments are well known; in 2021, she was included on Fortune India’s list of the Most Powerful Women. Nair, however, maintains her groundedness and credits her success to tenacity and an unwavering drive for perfection.
